Im about to go to the paint distributor. I need enough paint to repaint my engine bay. Any idea how much I need?

Also, im getting PPG, how much you think it would cost for enough to paint it. And if it makes a difference, the color is Crystal White (UC).

Thanks Guys

hey.

if ur using PPG, then i would assume ur using a base coat/clear coat right? Or, are u using like a two stage coating that already has clear in it?

either case, you would only need 1 quart of the actual color. 1 quart is plenty by the way.

I jsut painted my engine bay and i used Grip Gard by Akzo Nobel. Its a sign paint, but i got a hook up for it, plus, its just engine bay, not like im going for show car here. I used just half a quart of the paint, mixed with reducer and hardner, then it makes 1 quart. So ideally for you, go ahead and get one whole quart jsut to be sure.

here are some pics of the results

My estimates for Paint usage are different then most. I use a Lecroix Self-contained HVLP unit .
I can get away with a pint of basecoat. You will need a quart like Mr.UT said. I'll spray my engine compartment this weekend

Hey mr. ut, that engine bay looks great.

Anyway, which would you guys recommend, a base / clear coat, or a 2 stage? Keep in mind I haven't purchased a gun yet, so my options are open.

Also, any idea what it will cost for a quart?

thanks mann,

it depends on a couple of factors. For me, i wanted something that would look good, but it doenst have to be PERFECT. Im not buildign the car to compete in like hot import nights, so a madd *** paint job is not necessary, at least in the engine bay. Thus, i have the grip gard paint on hand to use, so i chose that instead. With a bc/cc, you will get a much better result that will look like an exterior paint job. Mines is "good enough" for me per se.

On the gun, the gun i used to paint tat was a sata hvlp 95 gun. that is an expensive professional gun, so i dont kno if you will be shelling out the $$ to get tat.

Price of paint??.. hmm, if u go wit a bc/cc, it will definetely cost more because u have to buy the basecoat and hardner to mix with, then you need a clear coat with hardner and reducer to mix with. so, that actually 5 separate quarts. A 2 stage, you need the color plus a hardner and reducer, thats it, so of course its gonna be a lil cheaper. soo, i would say, maybe around $20 per quart? if u get a good deal, but it really all depends on which paint you get.

thanks, ut

single stage is cheapest but basecoat/clearcoat is more durable, shinier, looks nicer and is easier to paint then single stage...i would do basecoat/clearcoat , it will run you 200-250 is my guess in price...if you can use a paint called OMNI au it is cheaper and is a nice paint....just my .02 cents ....its what we use in school....

btw 2 stage IS basecoar clearcoat, single stage is what maaco uses.... a quart of base alone is probably 100 then you need everything else...

I ended up getting a pint of PPG basecoat and then a clearcoat seperately. With hardener and reducer, it came to about $140.00, which ain't bad at all. No 2 in 1 stuff.
