how much longer will she last?

im wonderin how much longer my 88 has before the engine goes. Well, it has 170,000 on it, it has a pretty good idle. It smokes a little on a cold start and the idle pulses till the cars warmed up. I recently had a full maintainance done to it. And i usually dont drive it past 5000 rpm (afraid its gunna blow up). O and during the idle, there is a quick pause here and there. Thanks.

One more thing. When the car isnt warmed up, the car makes a squeaking noise when i drive. Only when i give it gas though. It doesnt do it on a roll. THanks again

no way to really tell, unless you do a compression test

What color is the smoke? Blue or dark is ok, white is worse.

the squeky noise might be cuased by loose belts.

well..i didnt really look at the color of the smoke..i believe its grayish. I have a buddy who said its smoking from a bad apex seal and that itll go soon. But the car seems to run fine. When i got the maintainance, the guy replaced one belt and checked the rest...it doesnt sound like its coming from the engine.

They dont really smoke from bad apex seals. Its usually bad oil seals. Its not life threatening to the engine, you just gotta add oil. The best way to tell how well off the engine is is to do a compression test. A lot of the idle stuff can be fixed, unless its compression related.

o yea. The car has been heating up like crazy lately. My normal driving temp is at half way ( stock temp guage). and on really hot days, itll go a little past half. Is my temp guage messed up? I had the radiator flushed out and all that. This may be a stupid question, but is the fan supposed to blow really really hot air? ok thanks

On an S4 (86-88) the normal operating temp on the stock gague is about 1/4 of the way up. Half is not good, and above half is really not good. Too much heat and you'll fry the coolant seals. I'd start by replacing the thermostat with a factory OEM one. The OEM ones are the only ones that I've seen work correctly. Also, In the summer, a 70-30 mixture of distilled water to antifreeze will be better than a 50-50.

Edit: I had the same problem a while back, and mine turned out to be a partially blocked radiator.

I'm up to 163k now on mine and I take the time to beat the crap out of her once I get into the city to and from work. By that point it's usually warmed up.

I've had the car since it had 148k on it. I get whiteish and blueish smoke here and there. When I get on it while it's still cold, it gets very angry and smokey. Occasionally on startup it'll **** some blueish smoke (i think it has a blue tint to it) when it comes off of the 3k warmup.

I continue to rag on her some more, redlining her thru 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at least once a day. Car seems to be damn happy and powerful.

well i pushed the car really hard today. I frequently went to reline in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. But the temp went past half way again. It cooled down to about half way once i took it easy for a few minutes. This was at night when it was cool too. How do i fix this over heating problem? What steps should i take? Thanks

i beat the crap out of my car with 175K, doesnt really smoke only on start up, that pesky hose under the intake manifold is leaking so my temp gets high if i drive crazy for too long, i need to fix it before i do damage
