how much of an effect can a bad afm have?

ok, my engine starts and runs and drives fine, but it eats gas like its suger coated and doesnt have the power it should for a catless (with header), open intake, no aux port sleeves, wired vdi, zero emissions engine.
could my afm be at fault here? i know it was tampered with cuz, well, i did it.
soon after i got te car i tryed to pull off the intake snorkle and it broke some apparently souldered connections in the plug of the afm,
so i opened it up and bent the pins down so it would work.
and it does, but only recently did i think back and realize how stupid that was.
could this be the prob? im getting spark, fuel compression is ok and no major vac leaks so this is about it.
is this a prob?

that was right after i got the car, then swapped the engine, so i dont even remember. i was so happy that it was running again that i didnt even notice if it ran right. (first car). plus that was a year ago. now i would have been all over that. plus its had a year for crap to get into it because its not sealed right anymore

Yes, it could, and will. My AFM failed and I could not go above 25% throttle.

This was before I knew anything about cars or electronics, so the drive to the shop was quite difficult...

FSM should tell you how to check the AFM's pins' resistance and whatnot...

Maybe you're just running overly rich and losing power?
