OK so i need to pass emmisions soon. I have a 91 N/A vert that never passes. This time i though I would try a little alcohol. So if I have about 1/8th of a tank how much should i put in? a gallon, half?

Thanks

It is better to give a link, that way when future people searhc though threads they can actually find some info.

Having searched on the site a ton, most threads about comon things just tell the OP to search, yet when you search you have to weed through 20 pages of results to find anything usefull, and by that time you are more confused then when you started. Sorry for the rant, here is the link that might help you:

You can buy denatured alchohol at the local hardware store in gallon cans. Look in the paint section. Which in turns makes me think it's also sold at your local Paint store. House paint stores.

I found this link; https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/emmisions-alcohol-601683/

Just by going down to the bottom of the page YOU are reading right now. At the bottom are several relevant threads to what your thread is.

Kind of off topic, but E85 was mentioned in the thread title. Isn't E85 bad for a fuel system not set up for it? Doesn't it eat away at the rubber lines or something like that?

I'd be interested if someone used E-85 during a emissions test. I mean going to the filling station and filling up with E-85 and then going to the test. Seems Iowa or some place that actually sells that stuff would be where the person doing the above would come into play.

Or maybe a thread asking if some using e eighty five had ever failed the emissions test and what are/were his figures.

Iowa does not have emissions testing, so that would be a bit of a drive.

Finally, an amount!!!!!!
So I'll do a 1/2 gal in my 1/8 of a tank.

As far as E85, there was a thread a few weeks ago about it. It is bad for the fuel system because it eats the rubber.
The reason I was asking is because its a really easy way to put alcohol in your tank. Like 85%. You would still need to top off with gas to save your car. I'm just going to Lowes (i h8 them) and hit the paint depart.

I found this site: http://forums.turbobricks.com/showth...t=73061&page=5

See post number 109. He's talking about E85. I find the whole thread kind of interesting even if it's not directly RX related.

Posts 185 and 186 are interesting.

I did a mixture of what all of you did. I searched through 20 crap threads, found 3 good ones. And went out and got 3 16oz bottles of ethyl alcohol from the local drug store. Added it when I got to about an 8th of a tank. . . was just enough. Total cost: 6 something. Next time I will try the denatured alcohol as it seems to be cheaper/safer. (my purchace contained small amounts of acetone, denatonium benzoate, and methyl isobutyl ketone)

Post 186 seems to indicate not much gain is to be had by using E85 as far as CO and HC are concerned. Some gain. How much? Got me.

Maybe try E85 at a location in TENN next time? http://e85vehicles.com/e85-tennessee.htm

There's probably more locations than that site says. You'd have to Google a bit to find out.

I know where to get it. . . I just never thought about that. So, you just run most of the normal gas out, then put a gallon or two of E85 in it instead of mixing it yourself . . . fill up with regular afterwards? If so that sounds a little safer in that the alcohol will be clean.

Please try it and report back to us how it worked!

I don't know. . . To be honest I'd be completely sketched out about putting E85 in there. Sounds like a terrible idea considering my RX7 isn't a flex fuel vehicle. 85% alcohol and 15% gas sounds like a bad idea to me. I was worried enough about the 85% gas / 15% alcohol ratio I ran last time.

Someone else do it first.

I just did this at a Kroger gas station in Mansfield Tx. I got a five gallon can and filled it up. I was going to use this five gallons to maybe convert one of my cars to E85.

As a spur of the moment thing, I put ONE gallon of E85 in the car I had with me. I already had about six or seven gallons in the tank. This is an educated guess. The day before the fuel light was on and needle down to zero and I put exactly eight gallons in the car. Since then I drove about fifty miles. So I estimate six to seven gallons.

So it's a good thirty miles from my house to this gas station in Mansfield. Virtualy all interstate and loop. I had no wideband/display with me and the car seemed normal. So I get to the house and unload the five gallon can in the garage. Then attached the Palm to the Zeitronix and went for a ride in the hood and the hwy. Eeek. I see a 15.8 to 16.3 afr at a steady sixty five. Driving in the neighbor hood doing a lot of stop signs etc, I feel hesitation due to the lean mixtures.

At idle I read a 13.3 afr with the E85 but once I REMOVED THE E85 the afr is down to 12.7afr (where I'd seen it days prior also, a bit too rich I agree).

So I more than less know what ONE gallon of E85 will do when added to approx 6-7 gallons of regular.

I still might do the E85 conversion on my 86na sometime. Maybe throw in the 550's from a turbo car and have at it. Then again, good sense says no, since the nearest station with E85 is thirty miles away. Kinda dumb to do it. Lawnmower, here comes some E85 at you.
