gauge cluster problems

ok i have a 87 na and just recenty had my friend re install and correctly hook up my after market radio...now my gauges dont work. meaning my tach, fuel, oil pressure, volt and engine temp dont work now. lights to the dash work but the gauges dont, dummy lights are out and now none of my climate control lights work either.

i know my friend didnt cause it because he installs after market radios and security systems to cars all day...installer at best buy.... He told me that whoever installed my radio before i owned the car fucked my wiring up because it was hardwired to my interior wiring harness and non of the unconnected wires were capped off or anything.

so i need some ideas as to how i can fix my gauges, dummy and climate control to work. i need help..please!

I guess I know now not to get stuff installed at Best Buy, since your buddy probably did it.

The previous installer as mentioned tapped off some switch 12v power source (the fused circuit for your gages). In the process of the install, either your buddy touched this power source to ground without properly setting up work conditions (disconnecting the battery), or he was an idiot an grounded the wire.

Check your fuses. Replace any blown ones and try again. If it blows again, get your buddy to pull your deck and go through with a meter and check all connections. Bet him a 6-pack of beer that he fucked it up if he is so confident at his "professional" skills.

Sadly I did the exact opposite before, all the lights turned on and would stay on. It was because I tapped into the wrong wire and it was feeding constant power. Could be that what happened is you he tapped into the switched power to the gauges and its just grounding out or the person before you did and it just turns out the new head unit grounds differently. Gunna follow the path of least resistance.

And no Best Buy is horrible, or at least the three I've been too. I had a kid come into my store the other day asking for a CD cleaner for his car stereo because Best Buy told him that the regular stereo cleaners won't work it will damage the stereo. I was dumbfounded.

ok so maybe he did cause it but not because he didnt know what he was doing. I trust his work cause he re wired his whole z31 and everything works perfectly. maybe tongassT is right or maybe suiicidalpenguin is. idk i still have to get his volt meter to check my fuses since i dont own a meter :[

but know one else can point me in another direction so i can check it all at once?? so far i have wire and ground checking and fuse, is there anything else i can check?
