How to measure intake temperature?

I'm wanting to check what sort of intake temps i've got after the intercooler, does anyone know any good ways of checking this? Is there any guages you can buy for this purpose?

Auto Meter intake temp gauge, fitted to the intake elbow.
Works great and responds quick......not cheap.

I have a digital gauge that I bought a year ago I'd be willing to sell to you cheap.
It consists of a probe and a digital Celsius readout. You can also set an alarm to go off at certain temps.
If you're interested, let me know and I'll take a coupla pics and send to you.

You can measure the voltage at the stock air temp sensor. Of course it's then your problem to convert that to a real temperature value.

Or, mount a GM temp sensor to your intake tract as values for that sensor are easily found with a little Google searching...

I don't know what the hell you were looking at, but I'm sure it wasn't anything to do with this topic...

I use a NZ$45 digital LCD temp display with the probe inserted into the IC-TB elbow. It works well but it's not back-lit. If you want something a bit flasher, places like Dakota Digital and Nordskog Performance make nice stuff.

it's all there, around 600$, but i might check out that jaycar one

actually i just bought the jaycar one, it's cheap, hopefully it'll work properly and be responsive.

What sort of temps do you look for normally and what sort of temps are a big warning?

SP Intercooler Temp. Gauge (Amber) $295.00

SP's intercooler temp gauge is made from real aircraft material and will measure the inlet and outlet temperatures in fahrenheit. The gauge will also measure the differences in the two temperatures. Dimension: 2.50 x 1.10 x 1.00. ***Complete Kit***

While i'm on this

How high is too high?

I've heard of people getting 80 degrees celcius (176 farren) on the top mount
down to 50 degrees, then down to 30-40 degrees for custom air to water.

What's a dangerous level?

I guess the danger depends on your boost level, are you retarding your ignition, what gas are you running, what plugs are you running, how hot it is outside,

I mean if you are running 14psi with the aid of a FCD so that means your ign advance would be that of 9psi on a S5, your running 89 octane, its hot outside, and you are running the stock plugs 7s and 9s....then anything would be danger

James

Edit - I have one of these gauges...I like it

Well boost is 15psi, remmapped ecu, ignitions probably retarded (not entirely sure but it would have to be) running 98RON UPUMP, plugs not sure, it's about 70 farrenheight outside majority of the time for a high temp, so it's pretty cold here
it's not at all running rich either, pretty stoic if that makes a differnece

Well that's a bit like saying "I'm looking for a new car" and posting a link to a Rolls Royce dealer. There are way cheaper options. Compared to the more basic ones around those have 3/4-sweep electric gauges instead of digital displays (double the price); thermocouple sensors instead of thermistors (double the price); an Autometer sticker (double the price, well I think they're over-priced). See where I'm going?

Plus, If you buy an "intercooler temp gauge" or an "intake temp display" from a place that sells over-priced aftermarket car parts, you should expect to be bent over a rain barrel. If you buy something designed to measure temps, any temps on anything you want, then you'll pay much more reasonable prices.

actually i just bought the jaycar one, it's cheap, hopefully it'll work properly and be responsive.
It's as good as any thermistor will give you. If you want something much faster reacting and don't mind building it yourself, Jaycar have a temp switch kit that uses a K-type thermocouple and has a digital temp display. I'm considering this to replace the one I have.

If it gets over 50degC I take it easy until the TMIC can catch up.

The RTEK2.0 displays both afm temps and intake temps as shown in an attached jpg of a Palm doing so.

The FLUKE 52 II shown in the other jpg uses K probes (picture a piece of wire about the size of a clothes hanger), and its less intrusive than some of the devices in above posts. The probe is only requires a hole be drilled of about 3/32nds in the duct and the probe inserted. MUCH quicker readings than the thermistor type probes.

The JAYCAR stuff works fine. I've built a couple of their Simple Voltage switches and their Frequency Switch (better than the SummitRacing one).
