How many of you started out N/A?
So I was just wondering how many people in the Rx-7 community started off with a N/A FC as their first FC or if they just jumped right in to the TII. Some may say it's stupid but I'm just curious.

I got an NA. It's cheaper, and it teaches you what not to do with a rotary. That way you can screw up a 3000 dollar car, you'll mess up a 1500 dollar car! That's what mine was for, essentially :p

My first (and only so far) is a 88 TII in great condition. I didn't want to go the NA route. I was about to though when I found my car. I really don't see what the big deal is about starting out with a NA to get used to it. I guess a lot of people can't handle a turbo immediately? Maybe it's the cost. They are a little spendy...

I started out NA and still have the same car after 9 years. Start out with what you want and can afford. Easier to have what you want to have than to swap a motor and drivetrain and sundry other bits later. More power never hurts (ie, turbo), except that if the car is going to be your daily driver, you might find the fuel costs painful - not that NA's are going to be confused with a Prius at the pump.
I wouldn't mind more power, but an NA in GXL or Sport trim will handle and brake just as well as a TII, if not slightly better (generally lighter). And the thought of all the bother of swapping a TII motor and drivetrain to get even poorer mileage and less acceleration than a new Mustang GT (which gets better mileage than an NA also) kinda helps put it in perspective. Plus my NA has been dead reliable despite being bagged hard with lots of autocrossing and track days ever since I got it.
Still, more power is a good thing - although if you're an inexperienced driver, I would urge caution: like any other powerful car, you need to learn the car's and your own limits.

I learned to drive stick in a 90 corolla. Slow as hell, couldn't handle and took abuse like a champ.
Moved on to an S4 NA
then to an S5 NA
Then to S5 TII DD (back in the day when gas was 1.50/gal. I miss those days.)
Now I have another S5 NA DD and an S5 NA with full TII swap weekend warrior (under construction).
Was it better to go NA THEN TII? I don't think it makes a difference. It all depends on the maturity, common sense of the driver and whether or not they can afford an RX-7 ( either by working your *** off or having mommy and daddy pay for everything).

^^^^ that's the stupidest thing I've read today!
thanks.
DD a TII for a couple of years and then come back and post whether or not you feel the same way.
I hate it when NA guys talk **** about the TIIs and I hate it when TII guys talk **** about the NA. Unless you've owned both you can't talk **** about one or the other. Stick with what you know and leave the smack talking for those that know what they're talking about.

My first Sports-car Was a 88 RX-7 GX, Which i liked, but it just wasnt fast enough. So the i went and traded a truck I had at the time for a 87 T2 which is alot more fun and still is not satisfying my need for speed. This sept. shes getting parked and receiving some more motor mods and a little body work.

Lives on the Forum
Went through a pair of CRX's before jumping straight into a Turbo II.
In fact, I still own this FC turbo.
I've gone through two other FC turbos...
Never owned a non-turbo.

So here's my intentions:
I figured i'd buy an N/A to educate myself with the engine and the car itself and then sometime next year to a TII swap into it. Is it worth the money to even buy an N/A when I will just be swapping out the engine in a year? And just for reassurance does it really cost ~3500 to swap a TII engine into an N/A? Is it worth the hassle to find the TII engine? Or would I just be better off buying a TII?
Keep in mind this will be my DD, speed isn't really everything but I would atleast like the car to be quick.
