How many coats of primer?

Ok,

i just finished grinding/sanding away all the rust on the roof where it meets the windsheild... i put a first coat of primer on, (paint brushed it on, for the edge where it meets the windsheild and sprayed the rest onto the roof.

How many coats of primer should i use? after it dried i then sanded it again (220 grit) and applied another layer of primer...

Now i'm waiting for it to dry... should i paint now? or sand and reprime again?

also how do u get the area to blend it better with the original paint? I have the areas i didn't touch taped up and newspapered.

you have to use 3 coats of primer and then sanded with 400 grip....better use a spray gun for better finish

ech72,

thanks for the advice...

But how does one blend in the repaired spot with the original paint? i have the area i worked on, which is pretty much taped all around it as close to the area i fixed as possible. Should i englarge the area to be painted with primer + paint? or leave it as a small area?

Pull the masking tape off as soon as you finish each coat. Let it dry, then wet sand it. Then tape it off further out for the next coat and do the same thing.

well ...what i do is for example if i have to repair a small dent in the fender, i paint he whole fender.... first i use the sander get rid of the old paint , if i got to fix rust i sanded until is all metal then apply 3 coats of primer, then sanded with 400 grid by hand...then make sure the area is very clean ...to match the color of your car just go to any paint shop and the code color that is in your car...then apply 3 coats of paint....within 15 minutes each time...then let it dry..if you have orange peel you have to sanded with 800 or 1000 grid sandpaper after that apply the clearcoat finish...then compound with a good buffer and that's it...

thanks alot banzaitoyota... but i've already started... and i can't use that primer anymre... i do have ketone matching paint though...

my next question is... each time i apply and move it back... i will still have a distinct boundry between primer/paint and old paint... how shuld i proceed? use progressivly thiner and thinner coats for the paint... because i've just put on the 3rd layer of primer... and waiting it to dry... then its painting time.
