I recommend always using the clutch, unless its broke & you’re trying to limp home.
Rev matching is always good.
When you get it right the clutch will not slip at all, and on a double pedal down shift, the car will not lurch at all.
After you get it smooth, then you work on quick.
Smooth is easier on the car, easier on your passenger, is more fun, and can be faster..

I just switched to a copper clutch & a light flywheel, so I have to learn to shift all over again.

rev match?

i mean when getting in first gear its hard to push it in like i'd have to use alot of strenth

rev match is like 2500rpms EXACTLT or something right?
then just punch, a friend of mine was showing me with his n/a fc, he was like watch this im pro put his leg on the chair and shifted up in gears

cept first gear thats the only time he used the clutch

1st gear is generally hard to push in, regardless (unless you're stopped).

Rev matching would be in general getting the input shaft about to the speed it needs to be at in order to mesh in the gear you want.

And yes, it's possible to shift without a clutch. You have to know your car's RPM/speed relationships VERY well.

my car will go into gear without the clutch at about 3500. not exactly like a dogbox. i just give it pressure nd then it finally gets into gear. i dont practice this, just have done it before. the trans was crap and is getting swapped anyways.

If you're downshifting, double clutching can make it easier to put it into first.

Double clutching means you push the clutch in, take the car out of gear into neutral, let clutch out, push it back in, slide it into first.

You can do that until you learn how to rev match

double clutching...... you aren't driving a linerunner for god's sake. although it sounds like he has a dying clutch or one that needs some lube bad if it fights him going into gear with clutch in. my sister's 30 y/o VW has no problem getting into gear and it's got the original tranny. but then again it is german.....

Germans built **** tough. You wouldn't want to be the poor german schmuck along side the road in winter with a f5cked tranny in germany... Neither did they.

Good bushings and high quality gear oil help alot. Also your syncros might be out of whack but try the above first. Whats this I hear about learning to shift with a light flywheel? I'm installing one so should I expect different behavior?

As you would expect, the unloaded (during gear changes) engine revs accelerate & decelerate faster.
This means you have to change (speed up) you shift timing habbits.

Mix in a new (in my case copper) clutch and it's like learning to drive all over again.
I hope my front diff mount can last through my learning curve.

A bad pilot bearing will also make first a nightmare.

I second what everyone else has said here, new bushings, change synthetic gear lube 75w-90, and rev match. That should get you in the ballpark. Also, while you're down there, change the gear lube in the rear end.
