Question How long will clunking half-shafts/cv joints last

Ok I think I have found the source of the clunking, finally. I inspected my half-shafts, first by grabbing the cylindrical shaft that goes to the wheel and pushing back and forth/up and down for any play on both sides, there was none. Then I checked out the cv joints on both sides, there is a small amount of play, I wouldn't say it's extremely minor, but doesn't seem like a big deal (yet). The passenger seems to have a tiny bit more play than the drivers side. Clunking occurs during shifting, bumps, whatever. It is not the driveshaft because that has been replaced, it is not any of the mounts because those are all solid. So I'm pretty much guessing this small amount of play in the cv joints HAS to be the source.

My question is, how long can I continue driving like this? Is it something where as soon as they get some play and I can hear clunking they could go at any second? Or is it a progressive thing where I have some time? I'm extremely swamped with school and low on cash and I'm not sure when I will be able to do this, that's why I ask.

Thanks for any input.

its probably being a bit harsh on the tranny, but other than that, the only thing its hurting is itself, and possibly the hub bearing... Personaly I'd just drive it until you have the time/money to fix it right, or until it breaks, whichever comes first, NOT last... FYI, I'd swap the wheel/hub-bearings out when you change the halfshafts out, they might need it.

Thanks for the offer, but like I said I have no money, I don't even think I have enough to cover shipping lol.

I've got the same problem on my '87 TII. I've been babying it for several thousand miles and it' no worse than when it started. I'm planning on replacing the inner cv joints soon as I can find a job (got laid off recently). Until then, I'm just driving a little less aggressively than otherwise.

probably several thousand miles honestly, granted you don't drive like an idiot and drop the clutch or nail the brakes all the time

I'm in my break-in period for my rebuild, no going over 4k with a 1.5k idle, I don't think I'm driving like an idiot or doing any clutch drops

Uhm... Because according to everything I've read you're supposed to raise the idle during the break-in period. I have my idle stop screw way down so that I'm showing 23% throttle at a idle of 1500 (I pre-adjusted this before the first time I turned it on).

I'm at about 415+ miles now, running perfectly.
