Question how 'important' are the corner seals

Hi Folks.

short story:
So after I replaced my bad engine after about 200k miles due to a raptured water jacket on the front iron with another engine with about 40k miles, this one broke down 2 weeks ago with about 60k miles on it
Opened it up last Thuresday and found a raptured water jacket (damn constructors) on the middle iron... Rebuilt the whole engine and everything worked out well. Just one corner seal didnt want to go back in its place so I literally hammered it in - resulting in no free movement... The engine fired up yesterday quite nice and everything looks good. So my question is if I do have to expect any bad surprises because of that 'stuck' corner seal?! Lower compression?

greetings,

Harry

Wow... that is not good practice. If its stuck and wont go in to the point you have to hammer it in, something isnt right and should be fixed correctly. NOT hammered in. The seals have to be able to move to work correctly. Thats almost as bad as on a piston engine saying "well, the piston rings wouldnt fit so I forced the pistons in and bent the rings, think itll be ok?"

Really bad idea... That could lose you some SERIOUS compression. Like, let's say 30psi or so.

LOL, you live and you learn I guess... But yeah, your rotor's corner-seal slot is probably bent at the tip on one of the sides. I hate to say it, but pull the motor and check out the rotor.

Just for my own knowledge, how "bendable" is a rotor? Is the metal soft enough to bend without weakening? Or is it brittle enough so that any bending weakens it and can cause problems? Incase I ever come into this situation, cant say Ive ever tested it, nor do I want to

I don't know, but the *very* tips of the rotors (or where each corner-seal slot is), are probably pretty weak. Just be careful and don't drop 'em.

So, you thought it would be a good idea to hammer something into place during an engine rebuild?
