How important is the air pump for smog testing?
Just wondering how important you guys feel the air pump is for smog testing perposes.... i removed it awhile ago and had a 2.5" exhaust put on the car. It uses one "long nose" magnaflow cat with no air pump or precat. Think i might be able to squeek it though if the car is hot? It runs fine otherwise, no smoke or backfiring etc.
and yes i did read the smog thread, but i am just wondering if it is worth my time to put the air pump back on, and have the port installed into the cat as the new 2.5" system dosnt have one. (the 1" line into the cat with the check valve on the end.
thanks,

i am not too worried about the visual inspection, the guys i take it too are good about that. But actually passing the tailpipe test is all im worried about. The cat is brand new, but i will install the air pump if it will be much help in passing the test.
So i should reinstall it?

If the cat has a connection for the split air pipe, then it needs air and hence the airpump. If the cat has no such connection then extra air is not required. However you may not pass without the airpump as it also serves to help combustion continue in the exhaust manifold and exhaust ports.
