How hard is it to fix an airpump?
I found this rx-7 for sale: RX-7 for sale in my area and they say "It ran very well before the air injection valve broke in the exhaust system(parts and labor to fix it is $1300.00). It still runs, but it hesitates a little and makes a loud noise". Its pretty cheap ($700) and I am pretty comfortable working on cars but have never dealt with an airpump before. An airpump pushes fresh air into the exhaust system to help catalyse emmissions, correct? If the valve for the air pump (I'm not really familiar with what parts comprise an airpump) is broken, I could theoretically pull the entire air pump assembly off and weld up the hole in the exhaust where the airpump was, correct? I don't have emmissions testing in my area so I'm not too concerned with keeping all of the emmissions gear, and it seems like an easy fix to a stupid problem. How hard is it to get to the airpump assembly on an n/a rx-7? Is this something I can do in my driveway with jackstands in an afternoon while borrowing a friend's welder or does a lot of the exhaust system need to come apart to make it all work? TIA,

It would probably be easiest to buy another one. I'll sell you one that works for $25! Once you had it apart it would be more work than it's worth. If you remove it you won't need jack stand or anything. It's failry simple and least expensive. As for welding, there shouldn't be any needed, just remove the air pump, and the acv, and block it off with a plate. They can be purchased from k2rd.com for ~$10. Let me know if you want mine.
