take the tank out, you will NEVER clean it out thoroughly otherwise.

there is no reason to not spend the 30 minutes dropping the tank out in this case.

I can't believe that anyone would try to clean that tank in the vehicle . You will be hard pressed to get it clean taking it off and doing a proper job . It won't cost you a bunch of money to remove and replace . The stuff you are cleaning with probably won't even dissolve the crap that is inside . it is just some time and not much of that and it will be a much superior job . Good Luck you are going to need it . Gerald m.

ethanol does do a great job at stripping the inside of the tank, this is why E85 guys have issues with dirty tanks. all the crap sitting in the tank quickly detaches and gets pumped through the system

I realize this is an old thread, but I was curious to ask if you ever found a replacement filter/strainer?
I'm looking for one. . .may end up *making* one.

RockAuto also carries the in-tank strainer.

Quick online check was a no-go at rockauto. I had tried mazdatrix earlier, no-go there either.

Could probably call local mazda dealership.
Thanks guys!

I looked last night and it was there. I checked for a 1991. It was under Fuel/Air->Fuel pump strainer.

I failed to mention that I have an 84 fb. Since I posted on the 2nd gen section, I noticed that rotabimmer77 was displaying the same kind of strainer I have/need. Thinking (hoping) that maybe he replaced it with the same kind, prompted me to ask the question.

You are correct jerryLH3, the strainer for the 91 model is there, but not the one I am looking for. . . unless this is a suitable replacement for my fb.

Thanks for the help.
