do you happen to have aftermarket pedal covers or some kind of bulky floor mat? stopping the pedal?

Mine is just unplugged. The wiring diagram suggests you would need to jump the terminals, but for whatever reason it works w/out. I don't remember having to do anything else. It's been 8 years though.

I can't remember if its an NO or an NC switch on our cars, but the fastest way to see is to disconnect it and try and start it. If it starts, you're fine. If it doesn't, jump the terminals with a small piece of wire and then it'll start.

Pull the two wire electrical plug off the switch. Install a jumper wire b/t the two wires in the plug. Done.

Make sure you don't mess with the lower switch on the clutch pedal. It ain't that one.

Some 86 and 87 came without the clutch interlock switch.

I've seen one not work because the piece of material that is supposed to mate with the plunger on the switch, had broken up and the hole was too big to cause the plunger to deprss.

It's a normally open switch.

Add something to the pedal to help push the switch. I think I glued three pennies when the plunger disintegrated. Problem solved.. but the plungers are for sell on mazdatrix.

Hayne's pg 43 Clutch-Pedal-freeplay and height check and adjustment.

2. Loosen the locknut on the pedal end of the pushrod
3. Rotate the pushrod until freeplay is correct
Repeat until correct

Fix the issue instead of bypassing it.

While it won't kill your car, the switch is a large safety factor (starting without being in neutral / disengaged) and also has some little effect on the mixture.

I'd bet a whole lot of money the problem has zip to do with clutch pedal adjustment, but rather the part the plunger mates with when the pedal is depressed, is all busted up and not able to depress the plunger in the switch. Been there, seen that, overcome that.

I'm very heavily opinionated about features like clutch interlock switches and won't get into that subject unless pressed, other than to say, that certain *saftey* features like beepers that go off when you open your door, are for the " Situationally Awareness Challanged".

I bet the bump stop fell off the top of the pedal arm. That would allow it to travel to the floor, but without that rubber bumper, it won't press the switch in all the way.

I just had the bump stop fall off of my clutch pedal, but it was on the front for the cruise control switch. It allowed the pedal to travel quite futher up above its normal resting position. I was going to post pics of my homemade bump stop for it, but I never got around to it.

I probably muddled up this thread. I've been thinking more about the *other* switch on the clutch pedal. Sorry 'bout that.

The words *bump stop* got me to thinking and realize I've made a boo boo in my posts above.
