Smile how does mazda make keys for our 7s?

was it unique to that car only, or 1 to many, like the same key for every 20 cars, etc?

thanks

All mazda keys have "key codes" Its in your Vin number. Here at our dealership, we get your vin, run it though our system and we can see all the info on the car such as key codes, vechicle history warrenty history and such.

I was kind of hoping they'd be ***** so I could get away with just having one set of keys.

That would be way off.

Based on production, if you had say key code 9876, there would be approximately 15 other FC's in North America with the same key.

Now weither or not these same key'd cars were still running is a whole 'nother issue.

And as covered 100 time here:

If someone elses key opens your car, and it is not the same key code, then your locks are dirty and gummed up and someon efailed to maintain the lock on your car.

So if your buddies key opens your door, FIX THE LOCK. Clean out the lock cylinder with brake or carb cleaner, and flow new DRY lubricant in. DO NOT USE WD40 or any other wet lubricant to either clean or re-lube, or in a year or two the lock will be all gummed up again.

graphite works magic on everything. locks, noisy throw out bearings (mixed with synthetic grease to make a paste)... but yeah, maintain those locks, both of my rx7's werent and its a chore just getting the doors to unlock. Gotta hold the key just right, then bump it 4 times while tapping your left foot on the tire
