how does an intercooler work?

I was just admiring the setup of the TII engine, and I got to wondering how the intercooler works. Exactly how does it cool the air? Just wondering, thanks.

The air comes out of the compressor side of the turbo, is forced through the intercooler, while air from the car moving runs across the fins and cools the air inside the intercooler off.
