How do you know if you have a J-spec 13b?

When i bought my t2 the guy said it was a j-spec motor, when i took it to tri-point they said it was an s5 motor.

How do you know if its j-spec for sure and how do you know if its an s5?

What are the diferrances between the s4 and s5 and j-spec?

J-spec sensors on a s5 will have stickers with n374 on them, A-spec are n370. also the coolant neck on top on the engine is plastic on a s5, alum. on s4

where is the sticker located? Also are the plastic and aluminum coolant necks interchangeable?

well, no not really.. most people just use the S4 ecu and use the S4 intake manifolds and front cover.

Ok there seems to be alot of confusion in this thread. You can have an s4 or s5 in A(American)Spec or J(Japan)Spec. Now if you need to know if it is a jspec look at the fuel lines. Aspec and Jspec are switched. Look in the fsm to see how the aspec is plumbed then look at yours. If its the same then its aspec. Also besies that aspec and jspec engines are exactly the same. And as for if its an s4 or s5 there are a million threads covering that. So umm Search and learn about your car and how to use the FSM thats free online.

J-spec engines have:
  • [*]
  • [*]
  • [*]
  • [*]
  • [*]
  • [*]
  • [*]
  • [*]

The EGR valve is on the back of the LIM, not on top of the engine. Only S4 NA's have it there and there are no J-spec NA's.

and the brake booster line comes off the turbo side of the UIM since the brake booster is on the passenger side of a Jspec.

None of the S5's have EGR's, a quick way to tell is to look at the knock sensor location, if it is above the T1 plug it is an S5 if it is located on the intermediate housing it is an S4. IF someone stripped the S5 engine completely down and changed the front cover then installed into an S4 there really is no way of telling if it is a J or A spec.

Post up a pic, I am sure folks can tell you what you have.

Goddamn freaaaakin' idiots!

NO S5 FC turbo have EGR valves.
Have you seen an EGR valve on a US-spec Kouki FC turbo?
NO SUCH THING!

If the short block was stripped down, then it is next to impossible to tell if it's J-Spec or not...unless you have a way to tracing the engine serial #???

If the engine still has the original INTERCOOLER, the wording is different J-Spec versus US-Spec.
Also, the J-Spec IC will either have one or NONE fittings in the back corner - US-Spec IC's always have TWO in the back corner...but it's more obvious from the wording on the front.

The internals are all the same.
The main engine components are all the same.
