how do you know if 5th and 6th ports open up?
just wondering if theirs any simple way to tell if your 5th 6th ports are opening up. also after hard driving when i idle my rpms go from almost stalling out to 1000 back and forth. any thoughts?
Put some black grease on the shaft of you're ports, and go for a drive, going over 3000RPM WOT a couple times.
Check to see if the grease has moved - if it has been wiped, they work. If not, they don't.
Also, in 2nd + 3rd, without aux ports, you will KNOW if they work or not..
My car, without aux ports, just drags and drags and drags when mine weren't operational..it's seriously noticeable when you can't get to redline, heh.

OK on an s5 the 5th & 6th portes open when the actuators are pressurized and push out, i just checked on mine. so it seems like the grese trick wouls only work if the actuators sucked in, right?

Damned people and their lack of specification!
On a S4 ('86-'88), the aux ports are driven by exhaust backpressure, and "suck in" to actuate. Put some grease on the rods, go for a nice hard drive, and see if the grease has been moved. Then clean it off so you don't attract dirt and screw up the actuators.
On a S5, the aux ports are driven by air pressure from the air pump, controlled by the ECU. They "push out" to actuate. The FSM has a way to check this, but I believe it involves disconnecting the neutral sense wire, venting the boost sensor to air (for 1bar reading), and revving the engine past the actuation point.
