Well, I land between the 4 and 5 grand and the ultra aggressive. I have yet to find a corner I don't like, and my normal shift point is about 6 grand (why did Mazda put a shift light in this car?)

However, since my SVT is a lot quicker, that is my speed demon car. I look at Rex as the freedom mobile, top down cruising around, playing on the curvy back way home every time.

i do the same exact thing, cept it runs great, i just dont have my license yet (THURSDAY BABY). its been sitting in my drive way since the beginning of summer, and it drives me nuts. well not sitting, i drive it like once a week.

 

I'm paranoid to death to drive my car 'hard' until it's even warmed up all the way. The original car only has 12k miles on it, but I'm going to take good and extra special care of it until I have financial secuirity... (I'm 17)

Ok... Normally 3k in the city... but normally, I usually redline it in 1st at least every other day, or at least it seems like it.

You all are saying "Until it's warmed up" -- Now I know it's good to not rev the crap out of it until its warm, but is it really THAT bad for it? What will it harm? Cause when I am late for work I tend to sometimes redline it, or come close to redlining (6-7k) when it's just been started up....

Well your engine is made up of alternating sections of aluminum and iron, which have differenent expansion rates.

All it takes is a bit of warpage to mess it up.

 

I remember sitting in the dark garage with the parking lights on so I could see the console glow. I had the radio turned down low and my hands on the wheel thinking, "Stay with me. I'll have you on the road soon." I could imagine the feel of her slicing through the corners and flying down the straights. I couldn't help a small shiver as a sharp pang of desire ran through me.
Now I drive her hard. Shift at 5-6K so I can hear the secondaries open up. I can hear the secondaries open with a whoosh at 3800. No power over 6K, so no point going over that. The TII catback keeps things quiet enough that I can play anywhere.
Every twist, turn and streetcorner is an invitation to play. I know I've hit it right when the rear-steer kicks in and I can just feel the Toyos starting to scrub.
I can't imagine driving slow in such an amazingly capable car. Drive the hell out of it. That's what it was made for.

I just can't get enough of that shift buzzer!!!

The 86 sees redline at almost every shift...Gotta keep the carbon from building up! Sometimes I get 15 MPG.

The 89 GTUs is only held back by traffic. Somehow my wife manages 20 MPG when she drives the GTUs. I only get 16 MPG.

Man, as light as this thing is, with all the torque its got...
no wonder my insurance agent reaches for a tube of K-Y and starts to grin when I walk into the office.

 

On a slightly different note, I drive it in platforms or heels, so I can reach the clutch better.

Up until recently, I drove it like a grandma, but now that I've driven the car enough to be comfortable with it, I'm a bit more aggressive. I pretty much have two driving styles, one that's normal and one for fuel economy. With fuel economy, I generally shift at 3000 rpms. This is usually in traffic where I can't have fun even if I wanted to. In normal, I usually shift between 5500 and 6000 rpms.

And every once in a while, I'll go into maniac mode, but that's usually when I think a cop may be after me and I'm trying to lose him. Stay off the sidewalk.

 

Daily driver, 80% highway. I usually shift btw 2500-3000 rpms to run quiet (but it's enough loud to others b/c of RB exhaust setup I love ).

 

for those of you who think that you are saving your FC's longevity by driving it easy you are mistaken. RX-7's need to be redlined occasionally to get rid of built up carbon. In NA's shifting at high RPM will keep the 5th and 6th ports exercised and in TII's it will keep the secondary injectors working. Redlining is good for the car. When people say their car seems to run better after they beat the **** out of it they are not lying.

As for me, I shift at 2,800 RPM consistantly until that temp guage get 1/4 of the way up there where the normal operating temp is and then I'll shift as high as traffic permits. If its an open road, 7,500 RPM- Here I come.

113,000 miles on the odometer and it runs like its new. The tranny is ****, but the engine is as good as ever.

Why wouldn't you redline it? Its not like you're going to break a tie rod

I do not think I am saving my FC by driving it easy (I do not think others think that way either) . I just do not need to ride it hard on my commute. I of course do redline it but it is not fun to do it all the time.
