How do you check the condition of a LSD in the junkyard?? And other LSd related ?

How do you check the condition of a LSD in the junkyard?? I am planning to upgrade my Diff in a month or so i figura i should do some research on it. As you can see the title of the thread i am goign to try to get a LSD unit from a junk yard. I was wondering how would i know that the LSD unit is good or not. I had a supra with a bad LSD unit and both of the wheel spinns one way unless i have a friend hold one wheel than i can spin one wheel all by it self. Since i can't drive any of those cars so obviously i can't do a burn out. Other question i have is what type of LSD is better? The clutch, viscos or torsen. I know the S4 has a clutch and s5 has a viscos but is the turbo 2's torsen that much better?? If i do get a turbo2's LSD would i only have to get a new drive shaft and half shaft? (i doult there is going to be any turbo2 in the junk yard).

TIIs didn't have a Torsen. S4 LSDs were clutch type, S5 LSDs were viscous.

If you want to upgrade to a Torsen, you need to look for FDs and Miatas. Some Miatas had Torsens that can be used in N/As, and I believe the FD Torsen is a drop in for TIIs.

Thank you for clearing that fact jerry!! I understand that both wheel spins at once if it has a LSD. But i had a supra that did that but the lsd was mess up and with some force one wheel can start spinning by it self. I just want to make sure that the LSD is not broken. For the Viscos type LSD do i have to change the fluid?? I understnad that Viscos LSD take special fluid by the way.

you should have one person on one side and one on the other and have one hold and one try to turn the wheel it should be kind of hard to make it spin if it is good

that method won't work for a viscous lsd like it will on a clutch.

I would just use regular transmission gear oil on my Impreza, and it worked fine. The center differential was viscous on that thing... It just worked off of the tranny and whatever oil was in there.
