how do my housings look?

Where do you think that flaking happened to begin with? In the engine! Why did it blow? Cuz you're a tard! Do engines run just fine with flaking? Yes! Is the engine life going to be lower because it's a rebuild with used housings? Yes! Are you going to blow it up again before you ever wear the housings out on their own? Chances point to yes! Use the damn things and kill this damn thread!

I'd use them. I guarantee you I've got much nastier housings than that in my current engine, which is the strongest one yet BTW (I've revised the ports about 5 times) - the car is just too fast for an NA with its broad power band and stock cat / cat back. I'd use them and enjoy them.

Use them. The top is fine, that is hardly any flaking at all. Id try to find a cheap used one in better shpe for the second, but since the scratch isn't on the combustion side, its should be ok. Id mkake sure its absolutly smooth first though.

88integraLS, that bottom housing you can catch your fingernail on the scratch. wouldnt that make the apex seal wear funny and lower compression?

Well yeah, it will allow some leaking of combustion gas but it's still a small scratch in the grand scheme of things. My RA seals scored the **** out of my housings and I can catch my fingernail on about 10 such scratches at any given zone across a housing, and my side plates have some extreme step wear, not to mention this porting scratch:



Despite that, I pull .5g in first from 3k to 8k, and it peaks at about .55 at 5k. Second gear is worth over a third of a g, sometimes almost .4 with stock main cat and cat back.


Scratches do cause loss of compression, but I wouldn't spend $800 on new housings if your old ones have that much life left in them, unless I was building the ultimate race motor. Knowing what I know about my own worn housings and how strong my engine is, it's not a big deal. Now tuning, port timing and bowl shape, timing, exhaust, and intake temps are quite a different matter. The rotary is very forgiving to scratches, and very unforgiving to bad ports, lol.

I think it's funny to say that if the chrome isn't flaking (at the time of the rebuild) it's okay to use them but if it's flaking at all to pitch them.

Does anyone measure the thickness of the chrome at rebuild time? How do you know that it's not about to start flaking 500mi after the rebuild?

It looked good at the time so it's okay if it wears off in a running engine...

I wonder when the flaking occurs? Cause I have flaking on my 60k mi. housings... Does this mean that most motors over 60k are garbage at heart?

I think the first housing is ok. I would look for another one in like condition to replace the other one. The housings are just too expensive to throw away. The first housing looks to have a decent amount of life left. I have seen much worse ones out there.

I have smeared a little prussian blue on my housings and raked a new seal over it to help indicate high and low spots. Ithough it was a useful check.
