Unbolt your catalytic convertors.
Shove a crowbar down the end and bang the funk out of the insides.
Reinstall cat, and vacuum up ceramic honeycomb chunks that come out.
You must use metal to whack them, a broom handle or such will not suffice.
You cannot cut the cats open. This is the only logical way.

boost on the way(GTU II)
welding? hehe.. remove the whole exhaust system(refer to fsm or haynes if needed) take all 3 catalytic converters off with the exhaust system......next separate all 3 converters......then...get a steel pipe or something u can hit with a hammer to clear all of the "debris" out of the converters. i use the term debris for lack of a better term.. lol
once u have cleared all of the "debris" out of the converters reinstall the entire exhaust system including the converters in reverse order of removal...
on a small note... it is great to have a haynes manual or a factory service manual handy... they come in quite helpful
pm me if u need help

1. The rear section of the exhaust system, beginning at the "Y" pipe, does not need to be removed. It is niggling to get out dual exhaust, and pointless, so why bother?
Repeat, do NOT remove the entire exhaust system (why would you take off the cat-back and the "header", anyway?)
2. S5 cars have only one precat and one main cat, so two total, not three.

The guts should flop right out from the abdominal cavity.
Cut through the guts at the esophagus and then at the rectum. The mesentery, which attaches the guts to the back of the abdomen needs to be cut. This is thin and you should be able to go through it easily.
Now remove the guts.
Now, why did you want to learn how to do this?

Just get a downpipe and main cat replacement pipe, or "race pipe" set up. Cheap and effective.

Yeah the haynes manual is pretty handy, got it as an early christmas present yesterday, i can't put it down.

Because getting a straight pipe costs money (and a stupid amount of money for a little piece of mild steel w/ a bend in it). When gutting your cat takes 30 min, and has the exact same effect?
I found the air pipe inside the cat was a real pain in the *** to work around.

Don't bother gutting your cat! It's a cheap mod, and exactly that! It's cheap in cost and cheap in results! Pay $5-$15 and buy a length of pipe and replace it. You'll get much better flow, no turblence, sound nicer, and most important of all, make more power.
Gutting cats is worthless!

Not to mention that it's hazardous to your health. You have any idea what's in those cats? The dust that is created is bound to cause cancer. Seriously....I gutted my main cat but then ended up buying a pipe from RX7.com. It was about $50.00. A muffler shop could have probably made me one for $20.00. Anyway....it's not worth the time/effort/health hazard. IMO, it's smarter to get a pipe.

Then get a vacuum going. I had mine running all the time sucking on one end of my cat (equipped with some stupid dust free filter thing). Plus the internals of a cat are just porcealan if im not mistaken. That isnt going to cause cancer.

It should be fairly similar.

Platinum and porcelain maybe when brand new but it's likely got 100,000 miles of exhaust that has been run through it too. I pretty sure breathing that dust is a health hazard.
