How do I get the 17mm nut on top of the rear strut off...?

I am in the middle of swapping out my springs, and i can't get that nut off... it is the one that is on the top of the strut shaft. If i turn it, the entire shaft turns, and i can't seem to find a way to keep it from turning. Am I missing something obvious here? help me out pls

thanks in advance.

impact wrench...or...you should be able to get a wrench on the end of the shaft...i think its 8mm?...or...channel locks and a piece of cloth so you dont hurt the shaft.

Take it off, use a spring compressor and a set of vice grips on the strut to hold it from turning..

on the strut? or on the shaft? b/c even if i hold the strut still, the shaft still turns....

i have a spring compressor already, used that to take off the front springs, and the nut on the front struts i wedged a screwdriver between the bolts on top of the setup to keep it from turning. however, that doesn't work for the rear piece.

fyi, the rb springs are significantly shorter than the eibach pro's!! don't think it drops the car much more (if any), but the springs are def. shorter!

How about leaving the springs in the car and the full weight of the car on the suspension. Then a deep socket and breakover or ratchet and loosen the nut most of the way off but not all the way off. THEN remove the shock/strut from the car and do the rest.

on the top there is a allen wrench hole or a little flat part to put a wrench on to stop the shock from spinning

The allen wrench will work too, last time I did springs, my 2.5RS didnt have them, so I put vicegrips on the shaft and it stops it from spinning,,
