How do I check and set my engine timing?

I'm new to rotary engines and have no idea how to set up my timing light on these things. On my 1949 Chevy Truck you hook it up to the number 1 spark plug. Which is the number one on a rotary engine?

Follow the procedure in the FSM. Download your free copy from the FAQ.

Connect your timing light to either leading wire. Keep in mind that some timing lights "don't like" Mazda's ignition system.

If after you connect to one of the lead sparkplug wires, the timing light flickers and does not show a steady flashing light, try reversing the timing light clamp on the sparkplug wire, OR just go for the other lead sparkplug wire. Then it will flash steady. Yeah, follow the FSM.
