When i bought this 7, the previous owner said it had the pinapple sleeves installed. Does the sleeves replace my vdi system? :-\ im totally confused

 

Pineapple "sleeves" are actually a part added to your existing sleeves to allegedly improve air flow when actuated. They have nothing to do with VDI. These sleeves are in the the 5th and 6th ports of your engines intake between the LIM and front and rear side housings. The part in question is a sort of rotary (not to be confused with rotary engine) valve that is actuated via exhaust back pressure around 3800 RPM (I think) to allow better breathing at higher RPM range. Go look at it on their website.
The only way to confirm that you have them is to remove your UIM and LIM and pull the valves out of the side housings.

Yes, but one small correction.

On the 86-88 models, yes, the auxillary ports (6PI I believe it's called) open via exhaust backpressure/flow.

On the 89-91's, they open via air pump pressure, where pressure is switched using a solenoid, triggered by the ECU. The VDI uses a similar setup to adjust intake runner length.

Ya a 87 was my first rx7 6 years ago. Hahah i have 90 & 91 now. Thanks for the input! I believe my aux are not working correctly.. It just seens slow at high rpms. Gonna check out my airpump.

 

I think it might have to do with the lack of a turbo

Pineapple aux ports inserts go into the stock ports that are simply locked into place into the stock ones with loctite.

The inserts help air move more efficiently by putting a curve over the dead spot in them where there is normally a 90 degree angle.

Www.atkinsrotary.com went further and made an entire assembly you can buy instead of using inserts.
