How can you tel if it's 88 or earlier? newbie

How can you tel if it's 88 or earlier? newbie

I'm a newbie so excuse my ignorance. I own a miata and some of the 2nd generation parts are interchangable with the miata, like the AFM,
the "rear end guts" and "transmission guts." Here's a website for more detail if you're interested... www.solomiata.com
I took a trip to the junkyard today looking for AFM, injectors and hopefully turbo LSD. From what I know 86-92 have same body style right? if so, how can you tell if it's an 88 or earlier? Becuase 88 and earlier are only compatiable.
One more newbie question... only looking under the hood 2 times, can some one direct me to where the injectors are, maybe a picture?

86-88 cars have black side molding. They also have square taillights instead of the round ones found on 89-92 cars. Also 86-88 cars dont have automatic seat belts or air bags (not all have air bags).

The injectors are located on the pass. side of the engine. You could see the secondary (longer fuel rail) injectors from the side. The primary injectors (short fuel rail) are under the secondary fuel rail.

the other way is to look at the tag in the door sill, I do not think you can calibrate the afm, but I may be wrong

These cars are old, and just because the body is a certain year, it doesn't necessarily mean that the car has the correct components.

For the AFM, note that throwing a stock RX-7 AFM on your Miata is, well, ghetto. If you really want an improvement, then buy a standalone EMS and ditch the AFM all together. Anyway, back to your original question, the 86-88 RX-7 AFM is rectangular, while the 89-92 AFM is cylindrical. You will need to remove the RX-7's air box in order to see the AFM. The TII AFM has the same air temp sensor calibration, but the airflow calibration is different than the non-turbo AFM.

The stock injectors in a non-turbo FC are "460cc", while the TII has "550cc" injectors. Note that the earlier cars had low impedence injectors.

The TII LSD has a larger flange and different sized halfshafts than the non-turbo RX-7 differential, so you will need a custom driveshaft to make this fit, and I'm not sure how you will need to deal with the halfshaft issue. Several non-turbo RX-7's came with a LSD, which will be marked with a yellow tag stating as such. Note that the 86-88 clutch-type differentials in the salvage yard are most likely shot at this point, so plan on a rebuild. Mazdaspeed sells race LSD components to registered racers. The 89-92 differential is externally the same as the 86-88, so it will also fit, although it's a viscous unit. The RX-7 coupes with manual transmissions have a 4.1 rear, while those with automatic transmissions have a 3.9 rear. There is also the rare GTUs model with a 4.3 rear. Like I stated before, what is actually on the car at the salvage yard may differ from factory specs.
