how can you check to see if your oil press. sending unit is bad?

like the title says...

My car is running fine--idles at 800 and smooth. NA and all stock. But the oil pressure is around 10-15 at idle. Once I rev it or when I am driving it is ALWAYS right where it should be. I always see around 60 at 3K and it never drops while at rpms, but only at idle do I see the problem. How can I test the sending unit to see if that is bad? And any other ideas? Thermo pellet and front cover o-ring symptoms are different from what I have read, so I am at a loss....

Well, the first thing you can do is troubleshoot the gauge. Turn the key to ignition and then ground the sensor wire in the engine bay. The gauge should peg and then un ground that wire after that happens. That might take two people.

The second thing to try is while the connector is off is to clean that area up. Clean the connector. Clean the post on the sensor. That area gets fithy with oil.

After that you most likely will have to replace the sender. Most any autoparts store can get you one for $30.

OR what you could/should do since your suspecting low pressure. You can get or build a oil pressure tester gague. They cost around $30 to buy. You simply put it in the pressure sensor hole and read it. The stock gague is INACCURATE. It is dithered down so the needle doesnt move very quickly. You would notice that when you put a real gauge on the engnie.

Now, if you want to build one. Got home depot (lowes...) and get a pressure gauge they use for water tanks, get a barbed connector to thread on to the gauge, get hose able to handle the pressure (might need an auto parts store) and the that fits the barb. Then get a barbed connector for the other end that will accept threads so you can thread it into the engine block . You just made a tester for under 20 bucks. This is a tester. Not a prem. gauge.
