Question How big is too big?

I bought a used intercooler, and its measurements (of the core that is) are 18x17x1.5". That's 459 cubic inches. If I am already running 10-12 psi on the stock intercooler, how would switching to this intercooler affect my performance?

Please don't raise the topic of if it would fit or not. Thanks!

If that intercooler is enough to cool a V8, then its too big! wink wink!

C'mon, anyone? What are the measurements from the Greddy fmic's? The intercooler definitely did NOT come from a v8. My name just makes fun of v8's. I'm quite faithful to my turbo 1.3 liters!

Do you know what it came off of? Some have horrendous pressure drop and some don't.

It came off of a volvo, that's all I know. Anyone know the volume of the Greddy units?

Fitting it under the hood isn't the problem. Filling it, however, might be; I'm not sure. I would like to know if anyone out there thinks 10-12psi from the stock turbo (89) will plug 460 cubic inches very well. Does anyone have any idea what the lag might be like? Also, what are the measurements of the Greddy front mount (it seems popular)?

Thats a pretty small intercooler as far as frontmounts go, most are atleast double that thick and wider and longer. The FC has one of the largest stock turbo's of any car, so it should have a problem with any stock FMIC, the real question to me is, is putting an IC that small in the front of the car worth your time?

while we are on the subject of IC's, are the starion IC any good, what about the NPR's - the big delievery trucks.

After looking at the front of my t2 I don't think there is really a lot of space behind the bumper for a fmic, or maybe its just because its so slanted. What needs to be moved around if I do put in a fmic.

I think the benefit would be that it wouldn't be on top of the engine. At a stop, I can only imagine the intake temps

I've seen them done well and it can be done. Most of them however have had the bumper support taken out from behind the bumper, and had the bumper cut to fit.

I am sure it would be better to some extent, but how MUCH better. There isn't much info as far as pressure drop and flow capacity on the starquest and volvo type intercoolers. I am sure its better than stock, just because of the fact its out of the engine bay. But, what if the core actually flows worse, then you run the extra piping and so you are getting more lag, and mabey your extra cooling is being counter acted by more pressure drop.

I have the smaller NPR FMIC. I had the end tanks customized though. It will go in my project 87TII.

I just bought my new TII yesterday. Black 1989, 77k miles, bone stock.....for now.

Most of the "stock" FMIC upgrades ARE better than the stock top mount, but not worth the time and effort involved IMHO. The starquest, volvo ect ect intercoolers are usually pretty thin, and just plain don't flow as well as a better designed core. Automobile manufactures usually build a pretty matched system, and it was mated to a stock turbo. Anyone still wanting to do this however, I have a stock 1g DSM sidemount I'll sell cheap, hell that IC has been to the 11's more times than I can count!

Did you get your tII from Gulf Breeze? Anyone have any other ideas for good front mounts that don't cost more than $200-300?

Yes the stock turbo is big for most auto manufacturers, but in the big scheme of things i think that it's really small. (for a rotary) It isn't that hard to max that turbo out. The stock I/C is a good core, it's just in a lousy location. So by getting one the same size up front you benefit from better cooling. Yes there is more lag, especially with an old (100,000 mile) turbo. But when the boost finally does come online, it really lets you know. If you can do the work yourself then the NPR or starion I/C is a good way. If you have to pay for it, then i would suggest saving your money for a turbo Hybrid, which would make more power @ the same boost level. This way it's something that would give more room to grow. Someone i know did a greddy front mount on a stock turbo and noticed significant gains, but with more lag. Overall disapointed for the $1,300 he spent on the system.
