How bad will exhaust leaks hurt me?

How bad will exhaust leaks hurt me?

Ok, now I know that exhaust leaks aren't a HUGE deal, but I've been having trouble with bad idle and stuff lately and I was wondering just how bad a few semi-large exhaust leaks would hurt me?

I'm gonna fix it soon enough, but I would just like to know.

I think the only bad thing is probably smells from the inside of the car and loud noises. Maybe some loss of backpressure too if its large enough. Theres are few other things but I can't remember right now.

If the leak is coming from the block and manifold from a broken (or unproperly sealed) gasket or loose bolts, I would fix it ASAP.
