they are still fun to drive. My GXL is an auto (for now). I'm a control freak so I miss being able to downshift and what not like I did in my 5spd 1st gen RX-7

I'm only speaking for my auto. Test drive the one you're looking at. It might run like a bag of hammers.

Auto's are so slow they will barely out accelerate an 88 ford escort from a dead stop, up until about 50mph when they begin to pick up pretty strong. ON the highway they're absolutely great. IN town you'll have old ladies in buick lesabres giving you the finger because you are accelerating too slow from a redlight.

Also, the auto in these cars is pretty weak, and usually don't last too long or shift very well at all. Once they start shifting wierd, they get worse quickly until they go out. You see about 1-2 good auto trannies out of every 5, in my experience.

My 88 auto was real slow when I 1st got it, then the longer and harder I drove it the faster it got. I have been wondering if it had a large amount of carbon build up, due to the early shifts, and my frequent "manual" shifting blew some of the carbon out.
