How to adjust the TPS

Wow, I just searched this topic and I got very confused.

I guess I need to make a setup with some lights, be careful I don't fry the ECU with wrong bulbs.

Holy ****!

Can't I just adjust the screw until it runs good?

Can some one please give me a complete procedure, in one shot.

I had to read many many posts and got conflicting data.

I read the FSM and it said once the one light goes out, its good.

I don't have this light tool, can't I just do it, buy the way the car runs??

HELP

I like the voltage method, but I used the resistance method yesterday and it worked pretty well.

On a similar note, if the TPS is adjusted properly, why would the ECU still give an error code? It's on an S5, if that makes any difference.

From what I heard the ecu will keep the error codes until you unhook the battery for a couple of minutes.

We did that too...maybe we didn't leave it unhooked for long enough.

to reset the ecu unhook the battery and lay on the brake for a bit which causes the brake lights to WANT to come on and drains any power in the system.

i read that link.... it says

Next step is to turn the car ignition on. Check your test lamps: You can either have one lamp on, both on, or neither on. If one lamp is one, that's good! If neither or both is on, you need to turn the TPS adjusting screw until you can get only one lamp lit at a time.

How do you do the other way?
what does he mean by turn the screw till only one light is lit.. witch light... does it matter witch one... im lost.

i only have one meter so doing the 2 meter methong is out i guess.

i hope resetting this will help my throttle responce.. right now it is crap...

doesnt matter which light is lit, just as long as ONE, and only one is lit.

so its like on a scale thing... no light = less ,,, 1 light = ok,,,, and 2 lights = too much?

now do i turn it ccw? is it a screw or do i turn the whole thing..

in the pic on that site it shows the tps is right behing the alternator, under my TMIC. Is this correct for a 1987 tii?

Yup, its inconveniently positioned under the TMIC. I use a PVC TMIC eliminator when I have to do adjustments under the TMIC. Makes it easy to run the car, and make adjustments. Just dont leave it in there!!!!

Gotta give HAILERS another shout-out on that one.

Wait a sec... is the TPS different from that "idle speed adjust screw" on the BAC valve, or am I just crazy?

No, the car should NOT BE RUNNING!!! I suggested the PVC pipe so you could start it AFTER THE ADJUSTMENT, and check how it runs.

Its a screw, in front of the TB. Its usually covered by a plastic cap called a "blind cap".
