Question How 2 check s4 tranny mounts?

Yes, I searched. And I did not find an answer.

An s4 owner on rec.autos.rotary had a dealership do some work on his car. They came back to him and told him that his motor and tranny mounts all needed replacing.

We told him how to check his motor mounts, and it turns out that they're fine. But nobody's posted anything yet about tranny mounts. He wants to be thorough - there may actually have been a hair of truth in what otherwise looks like another stealership fleecing...

Anyone know a way to check the tranny mounts?

Same way you would check the engine mounts. Make sure the rubber is not split or detached, and does not show signs of rot. Unless the engine mounts are less then a few years old, they probably need to be replaced. If the owner removes them, he/she will probably find that the rubber is starting to tear. If they're original, they should be replaced as a matter of principal.

If those are the original tranny mounts... they are shot.. no if ands or butts....

MazdaTrix has 'em, get the "sides of Y" mounts AND the center Plate... replacing one or the other won't help.

Change the shifter bushings while you are at it, this takes all that slop out of the gear shifter and is WAY worth it!!

Visually checking them Is key. If your seeing all the fine dry cracks on them, theres one. But actually try rocking It If you can. I have new Tranny rubber mounts ready to go In my conversion. I was seeing way more play than I like too see. It was determained they had to go.
