Cool hot flashes

If your accelerator leg is getting hot it may be the heater servo motor failed in the on position, leading to the scalded leg scenerio. This is the small motor that opens and closes the valve letting hot coolant into your heater. It can also fail in the off position, meaning you get no heat or somewhere in between. The logicon can be the culpret, but in my case replacing that didn't help. Since removing the heater to get at the little bugger requires removing the instrument panel, which is a big pita, my fix was to install a wire to manually control the heater valve from the driver's seat. To do this, disconect the wire to the servo. (On driver's side of heater. You need to get upside down with you head under the dash to see it.) I use a coat hanger inserted through the grill in the center console to flip the heater valve. (Remove the grill and drill a small hole in the lower left corner of the duct. Make a 1/4 inch (6mm) bend in the end of the wire, insert it through the hole and connect to the valve using the existing plastic connector to lock it in place. Reinsert grill, cut the wire to the desired length and voila, no more roasted leg. Total time 15 min., including finding the coat hanger). You can even paint the end of the wire for that customized ghetto look. Here's a pic of the finished product.
