Hot Air No Good?

A while back i removed my stock airfilter and air filter box, and put a cone filter with an adapter plate to the afm. I went to an rx7 specialist and he told me it is no good, becase it is just sucking hot air from the engine, that kind of makes sense, but then what should ido, I have an 86 gxl i wantr to get it to suck in cold air. What are the best ways of doing this?

if you leave the stock intake part over the rad that will help a bit. you can build a box to keep out the air. search for cold air box

That won't have any effect, because that duct releys on air being sucked through it to work. If it's not part of a sealed system only a tiny fraction of the amount of air entering the filter will come from it.

MazdaRx7Racer4Life, that mechanic is right, underbonnet air gets very hot and will cause a significant loss of power as well as increasing the chance of detonation. You need a heat shield that isolates the filter from the rest of the engine bay and a duct that feeds outside air to it. Like Scott said, do a search and you should find heaps of info.
