Horn voodoo

Alot of voodoo from this car. I got it and the horn dont work. Then after steering removal it works. Then when I torque the horn nut it either lays down or waits til I get down the street then it will sound off until I pull back on the wheel some.

It has to be some kind of ground issue or with that plunger spring.

Sounds like the cover on the steering wheel is bent. If someone has tried to remove it by force (without taking the screws in the back out) this can be the case.

Hint: When you make the horn work by pushing on the *buttons*on the steering wheel, you put a ground on the relay in the CPU. The Buttons apply a ground to the CPU when you push them.

I don't understand some of this. I just remove the center cover on the steering wheel that has the MAZDA emblem on it. Then with a 13/16" socket, remove the nut and the wheel. I've never ventured behind the wheel to undo bolts/screws/nuts etc.

I had been installing it w/o taking the two short screws on the back, so there was always some slack in the two trigger wires. My guess, when I torqued down on the wheel (21mm) I pinched them. So I electrical taped them then took those two screws out from behind the wheel. Got out the slack and plugged it in and getting everything aligned was easier and less chance of damaging the plastic 'hook' guides in the wheel cover. The wheel went back on fine. I bet why it wasn't working before was the fact there was so much grease on the metal ring on the back of the wheel that the contact plunger didn't have any metal to get grounded.

Now, back to some higher levels of voodoo.......the steering sensor.
