Hole Under Tranny?

While looking at the tranny today, I noticed the drain plug (bolt) and a hole with no bolt in it. Just an open hole. It's closer tot he engine than the drain plug.

The hole is about an inch in diameter and I can see a gear when I look into it.

What is it, and what is it for?

That is either the fill plug or the speedo cable connection. Either way it is not good that the hole was exposed. Did you check the fluid level? You should drain and refil the tranny soon and get either the drain plug or the speedo gear.

*EDIT*

I'm thinking it's a hole just for crap to drip out of. I think the gear I see is the crank shaft, so that would be reasonable, I think.

looking at the pic the gear yer seeing is prolly just the flywheel.

shouldn't be any fluid in that part of the tranny, you are prolly fine.

just looked at mine, there is only a rubber stopper that goes there.

Hmmmmm....don't know if I *have* to have the stopper, but it would be nice so nothing flies up inside there.

Do you guys know where I can get one?

There is supposed to be a rubber seal there part nimber N204-16-145. See this site http://www.mazdaformance.com/rx7parts.htm and the 86model and the transmission area on page 1-L6. I'm not sure how the label the pages. Could be section 1600-1. You'll have to figure it out yourself.

Its just an inspection port.

It's the clutch disk check hole, it will allow you to see the thickness of the clutch plate and pressure plate. It's covered up by a rubber plug hole. The nut on the bottom of the tranny about a foot back from that is the drain plug for the transmission.

Ya know, I really wish people would only answer if they know what they're talking about...

There is a rubber stopper that is supposed to plug that hole (as mentioned previously in this thread). The stopper is there to prevent road crap from being thrown into the clutch assembly and contaminating it. Excess clutch wear and throwout bearing wear could occur if this part is missing. As HAILERS mentioned, the part is easily available.
