Hitachi/Turbonetics upgrade
Does anyone have or has anyone had the Turbonetics TO4 compressor wheel and housing upgrade on their stock Turbo II Hitachi? I'm looking to find out about reliability and power/psi potential. Yes I know its not the best way to go but I've already bought it and am having shall we say some issues. Its not my upgrade of choice but just an intermediary till I can buy the "big" turbo set up for the car. Any experience or input would be greatly appreciated.

I know of a gentleman that lives near the twin cities in Minn and he said that, turbo set up netted him 327 @ the wheels. Obviously he had other mods but for the money i think it's the way to go until you can afford something bigger. I too am doing this soon. Who did you go through and how much was it? give me details!!! Oh and he said it was reliable too. He had it for over a yr until he went T-66

Well without going into a long drawn out strory(this is the short version believe me) I'll tell you my situation. The set up was done by Turbonetics. My car has been in the shop for a while because of various tuning gremilins. So consequestly the turbo has seen VERY little "on boost" time. Anyway we were trying to street tune the car a bit and since it is a new motor just gradually getting into boost. The most we let the turbo hit was 8psi and upon deceleration lots of smoke out of the exhaust. Found out the oil seals were bad in my "brand new" turbo. Sent it back to Turbonetics so they rebuilt it a second time. After getting the turbo back all of the bugs were finally worked out on my car except one. For some reason it wouldn't build anymore than 12psi max. No matter how the boost controller was set. We even tried a different controller that we knew worked and still the same thing. Well on Monday we found out the problem. My now 2 time rebuilt turbo grenaded. The nut on the compressor wheel was apparently loose and it just fell right off. Luckily none of the debris made it to the intercooler or the motor. So my advise to you is if you want to go this route then have it done by someone other than Turbonetics. I hear Majestic Turbo has a really good reputation. And I too have heard somewhere in the mid 300rwhp range for this set up at 15psi. I guess we'll see if they can get it right this time but I unfortunately doubt it.

Thanks for posting that because I plan to do the same thing on my 87TII. I bought a 89-91 turbo and manifold that I am going to send off to be upgraded. A while ago I sent Turbonetics and Majestic Turbo the same email to see what type of response I got back. Turbonetics never did reply to me but I received a reply from Majectic the very next day with a number to contact them. The guy I spoke with on the phone was very patient and informative so when I am ready to get this done I probably go to Majestic

my turbo is just a stock S5 example, a turbo workshop hi-flowed it, and replaced the compressor wheel with a T04 wheel. "v" trim i think, not at all certain.
it has good midrange power, i am happy with it, tho i was expecting more from it. not nearly as huge an upgrade as i thought when i handed over $600AU for it. my friend paid $900 for it, then didn't want it.
If u want *huge* HP, then save your pennies, and get a T04 straight off the bat.
the hybrid is the best way out of having to spend dollars doing a proper T04 upgrade, with the wastegate and all that ****...
Dyson Rotary sell them here in Oz for $900AU i think....
for what it was worth...

I had that turbo upgrade done to my TII. Turbonetics did the work on my turbo and I haven't had any problems with it so far. Of course I am just finishing the break in period for it and my new engine.

If you guys are looking for the upgrade, contact Bryan (FEARED7). He should be able to answer all your questions. He does turbo upgrades. I'm not sure of the price though. He has one in his Rex. Good luck,

If I remember correctly the rebuild/upgrade cost around $800. something from Turbonetics. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if they can get it right the third time.

A mate of mine a had an FC with a stock Series 4 turbo that had a seriously ported wastegate (essential) and a T04 wheel under a modifed stock housing. This made 225rwhp and went really well. It'd go even better with the T04 cover you want to use. Obviously this approach has hp limits but for hp/$ it's pretty good while you save for the T66 and external wastegate!

A turbo upgrade can get you upto almost 300 rwhp depending on your trim selection and fuel upgrades. FEARED7, Chris Ng (at one time or another), and I have these. The cost is around $500-$550 depending what you want. Contact Bryan or K2RD.com. Jay
