Exclamation High Idle in Park, still cuts out w/AC

Okay,
I'm pretty new to this thing, but I'm on my second RX7. I love them. Anyway, this most recent one idles at 2K when in park or neutral which I thought was very odd, but it's an automatic convertible and I've only been in one other ...ever. Anyway, it was sort of hard to start but kicked up to 3K until the choke did it's warm up thing and it settles to 2K. When I put it in gear the whole car seems to pull to the ground (I'm not kidding..the car doesn't surge forward...it just feels like it pulls to the ground). Then it drives okay, although it seems to hold in gear to long or not be able to decide which gear to be in. I wish it was manual because it's a beautiful car.
So if that wasn't strange enough, I can't use the AC unless I'm in park. I can turn it on and off all I want to in park with no trouble what so ever....no hesitation..nothing. The moment I drop it into gear...the car dies. This happens if the AC is already on....or I'm in gear and turn it on.
So, I'm thinking...why the heck does it idle at 2K in park and 1K in gear? Is the transmission really putting that much drag on the car. I've never heard of that before, but I'm supposed to pick up the car tonight:-o

Oh...it's a 1990 RX7 convertible.
