High beams work but won't stay on. S5 Coupe
My high beams operate (as do FTP lights) but when I pull the switch all the way they shut off. Is there anything besides a bad cluster switch (new one is $250+, good used ones are hard to find for S5...) that can cause this? I checked my dimmer relay and it was fine (looked brand new too, despite being 20 years old).
The switch feels kind of funky as far as feedback goes, but I didn't have this problem until I replaced my gauge cluster hood (mounting tabs were all broken) with an S4 hood... which works but the switches don't mount flush. Could wiring cause this?

Isn't this an issue with the CPU on a series five car? Jackhild59 posted recently on this type problem. It might be a Latching issue. On a seires four the *latch* circuit is in the switch but on a series five it's in the CPU board.
Try this link to see if the problem is similar....or not: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ighlight=LATCH

I have this same issue. The seatbelt light blinks too and if I hold the high beam switch back, the high beams will flash on and off with the seatbelt light switch.
If I ever get un-lazy, I may have a solution to the problem.

I don't own nor have ever touched a series five.
But if I look at the wiring schematics in the series five wiring manual that is available online or look at the wiring I got sometime ago off ALLDATA, I see no seperate wiring for a convertible vs a coupe.
Even the online (BODY ELECTRICAL) trouble shooting section has but one diagram talking about the headlights/dimmer etc and shows no other diagram for convertibles.
The attached diagram came out of the 91 BODY ELECTRICAL section and shows the LATCHING CIRCUIT being inside the DIMMER SWITCH just like on a series four.
You turn the headlight switch ON and that puts a ground on the Dimmer Relay and the Headlight Relays coils to pull 'em in (BLUE LINE).
The Latch Circiut in the dimmer switch should then hold a ground on the Dimmer Relay even if you let the dimmer lever (switch) return to its spring loaded normal position. That keeps the dimmer relay pulled in so the headlights go and stay bright.
I don't know where any other diagrams exist just for the convertible. If it were me, I'd get me a SERIES FIVE dimmer switch and have a go at that. Well, probably not. Would pull the plug off the dimmer switch and put a gnd on the wires that go to the headlight relay and the wire going to the dimmer relay and see if the headlight stayed full bright ...or not with those gnds on 'em. If the lights stayed bright I'd get me a dimmer switch for a series five car.
Like I say, I own not a series five and only see what I see in the series five Body Electrical diagram.

A convertible.
Hailers, the convertible actually has the latching circuit within the CPU as opposed to the dimmer switch. I know te hayned manual doesn't show it but the last time I researched this, I found that this was the case because I had originally figured I needed a new light switch. Verts can get this probelm where the high beams wont stay on or flash with the brake light, and the alarm beeping when armed instead of beepng once and having the light come on. All the info I have read on the subject pointed to the CPU and people fixing the issues with a replacement CPU.
I don't know where to find a diagram specific to the vert. I wish I did, it'd make things a hell of a lot easier.
