Hi question plz help

Hi my car (90 rx7) runs really rich so i think...originally my car use to have a strong gas smell and made popping noises in my exhaust from fuel not burning reaching the exhaust and exploading. i fixed that by paching up a hole in where a sensor atches to this cylinder thing attached to the air box. now it has a mild smell and still does the ocasional poping would u know how to fix this?

The 'popping' is normal. It's called 'backfire.' Don't worry about it, all of our cars do it. It's not bad for the engine (its normal). I'm not sure about your other question, though.

What are you talking about? You got a missing sensor and you patched the hole that the sensor was in? Why not replace the sensor?

Did a hose come from some metal stuff in the back of your engine and plug into a blast plastic thing? which goes down into a hose that connects to the air box?

translation: does it go from the UIM under the BAC valve to the black nipple that connects to the air box?

Ok. The "cylinder thing" is your airflow meter, or AFM. Its vital to the proper operation of these cars, and adjusting or messing with it in any way can cause Bad Things to happen. When you say you "patched up" a hole in it, can you be slighly more specific? Which hole? What made you want to "patch" it in the first place? What method/material did you use to patch it?

Furthermore, running rich is not an easy problem to diagnose. My vehicle ran rich with a popping exhaust (technically "afterburn", not "backfire" on these cars) until it died. I think it died and ran rich and afterburned all for completely unrelated reasons (died from a tossed seal), but I wasn't able to troubleshoot it fully before it died. I spent a LOT of work on it though to try and figure stuff out. But it started both running rich and afterburning after I did an exhaust + intake mod, as you seem to have done. Perhaps that's just a normal consequence of upgrading those components on these beasts.

... it has a downpipe ... and well in the beggining there was a crack in it like about maybe a quater wide so i patched it with duck tape.
before that though my car wouldn't even hold an idle properly i would have to keep reving it so that it wouldnt die on me.

You can, but only if you like downgrading the parts on your car...

check your timing, when I installed my filter the timing was of.

if you have a non turbo, a little screw should be on the top of your engine...try playing with it a little by little. turning to the left or right.

and then see if it will run rich...

I also put the tornado in my FC.

man it was running rich then. Now that I fix it my RPMs don't go over 1000 when the car is warm.
