Hi everyone, new to site!!!

Well, I just bought my second RX-7. My first was a first gen 85 5 speed. My new one is a 90 RX-7 GXL, white and its automatic with 70,000 miles on it, got it for $1600. My car has a really hard time starting, it takes forever and sometimes wont start at all. I replaced the spark plugs, got a new battery and new k&n air filter. The previous filter has a mouse living it, the mouse made a home in my air filter and crapped all over the place. He wasnt there when I opened it up but man did that thing smell terrible. Anyway, I am taking my car into Holiday Automotive on Monday to get a tune up and then I have to pass emissions soon. My exhaust rattles a bit so I am guessing there is a leak somewhere. I going to replace the alternator tomorrow and hopefully it will run better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There could be a few reasons for the starting issue. I'd get the injectors cleaned. Also, low compression, or a fuel leak could cause the problem. Find a rotary guy close by to check it out for you.

Welcome to the forum.

The starting problem could be due to the reasons given by stylEmon. The top of the list should be a compression check (do a search in the forum for the procedure, you don't need the expensive check tool) so you can immediately establish whether it's the motor or not. If the car has been sitting for a while, I'd change all the fluids and filters (including the fuel filter in the engine compartment and even in the tank).

Your alternator is probably fine. Check the volts while the engine is running at idle. If it's around 14 volts (14.4) then it's working. Alternators on FCs typically last to around 110000 miles.

The rattling in the exhaust could be from a loose heatshield on the exhaust manifold. If the exhaust is too loud or looks very rusty, then you should replace it.

1. Don't just throw parts at the car.

Rough starting probably has nothing to do with your alternator. Reman alternators are ~$80 or something... not worth it without testing to see if you really need it.

2. What does the voltage read when you have the key in the ACC position? On position? While starting? Slow starting could be due to a weak battery. Check the voltage on the battery with a multimeter.

The mouse living in my airbox didn't escape.

Wow, how long was that car sitting? I would be wary of carbon buildup. It seems pretty neglected.

Thanks

Well, I just took it in to have it checked out and I am not sure how long it was sitting before I bought it. The previous owner said about 2 months but I dont believe him. He obviously wasnt on top of things when it came to taking care of his car. I should find out soon what the problem was, the mechanic is checking it out today. Thanks for all the tips and man, what are the odds of someone else having a mouse in the air filter, thats some funny stuff. thanks

Uh oh!!!

Well, I called my mechanic yesterday and he said it wasnt anything simple so, thats a bad thing. That means alot of money down the drain, which sucks. I dont really know what could be wrong with a car with that few miles on it except maybe build up and if that is what it is, then what can be done about it? Any ideas? Peace
