hi everyone
im new here, and i am interested in buying a 2nd gen rx-7. what should i look for when buying one? anything i should stay away from? im up in canada btw. anyone here from canada? thanks!
Check for rust on the wheel wells, or really rust anywhere for that matter, insist that you have a compression test done before you buy it, ehhhhhhh theres probably something else. Anyone else want to chime in?
Ask for a test drive and beat the **** out of the car(redline it a couple of times and take a couple of hard turns and test the brakes like from 60-0 then check how the temperature changed if it tries to die on you or what ever. Take it on the highway do some seriuos shifting and see how the tranny handles it. but also check the usuall. The compression test is important cuz they might be trying to sell you a blown motor.
Usually if it's 100/100/100 or above for both rotors, then the engine's pretty fresh. The reading should be taken after the car is warmed up & using the mazda rotary specific compression tester for all 3 faces
Anything less than this, and the engine has higher mileage but should last for a long time. Anyting below 60/60/60 and your engine is getting fairly low on compression and may need a rebuild soon (preventative maintenance to prevent an apex seal from coming loose inside the engine)

like vaughnc said, get the compression test done AT A MAZDA DEALERSHIP. They have a special compression tester for rotary engines.
Make sure the idle is rock hard at 750rpm
Check all interior vents, consoles and everything for cracked plastics.
Check out windshield washers, and the basics.
If your getting an NA, if its an 89+ you should feel a nice kickback at 5500rpm, if not, your gonna have to open up the manifolds to clean the actuators. Make sure you get lots more power after 3800rpm too.
SLAM the gears. NA's get a lot of grinding gears.

Hey guys I am new here too, I am also in the market for a Gen 2 TII, I was just wondering the cost of a new engine...
I say this because I have found a acouple of cars with good condition bodies but need engine work.

Acura Racer112, Contact hypntyz7 (www.rotaryresurrection.com), He rebuilds engines for about the same cost as Jspecs.
