Question hey peoples-do I need to pre lube a turbo in any way before installing?

Well I am getting every thing ready for the new motor install. I was just wondering if I need to pre-lube or oil the turbo when I put it back on the motor before I fire it off?

This is an S5 turbo but is bone dry.

Thanks!

YES!!!

I did--filled it with oil, spun it around a bunch of times--then filled it till it overflowed. By filling I mean the part that has the oil line going into the turbo itself.

Couldn't hurt anything so just do it. Prelubing is always a good practice.

Do as stated above......and before you fire up your new engine pull the plugs and plug wires and spin the engine over until the oil pressure gauge shows pressure.

Put some oil in the lower spark plug holes(4 oz each), it's gonna be a bitch to start and keep running the first time....and a lot of smoke, a lot.

This is the best thing.

Pull the EGI, plugs or whatever you want to keep the engine from firing. Hold the turbo compressor (I used gloves just in case) and have someone turn the car over a few times. This will circulate oil through the system and make sure that the journal bearing are properly lubed before startup.

These are the instructions that came with my new Garrett turbo FWIW.

If you don't do this the turbo will spin without lube and this *could* destroy the journal bearing first time you turn the engine over.
