Sure.
Straight bodied First gen with blown motor
500 bucks and not hard to find.
I know of a good condition buick GN drivetrain for sale, including ECU and wiring harness for 2500. Unless it is sold already, but there is an example of what a used motor and tranny would cost.
So you are at 3 grand...
I would imagine fabricating motor mounts and a tranny cross member woud cost nearly 500 dollars. Then there is exhaust... lets just say another 500 bucks. umm I cant remember how much the 10 bolt rear swap was. I think it was 600 dollars, and that includes heavy duty parts and brakes I beleive. So know you have 400 dollars to spend on misc **** like shop towels, brake pads, fuzzy dice, lube, and fluids like oil, tranny fluid, break fluid, but most importantly beer.

13bs are incrediably light. Im small and I can manuver the block around my garage. A friends dad helped me put my first engine in the cr by hand, just him no cherry picker. Again 4age is pretty light too.

I have a 350 in mine with a 200-4r tranny. You will have to have the overdrive for what ever engine you use. The gearing is all wrong for a V8 without it.

My glide works just fine for inner city driving, and I have had it on the highway a number of times. I just stick to the slow lane. I do about 60 mph at a little over 3 grand.

Yeah I have been there alot. My Screen name is mouse.
I will be selling my car soon in order to releive myself from financial instabillity, but I do plan on ruining another RX-7 in the not so distant future. I think I may have to do a GN drivetrain swap into a 1st gen this time around.

would you say it's more/less difficult to put the GN engine in a 1st gen than a second? I love the GNX7 swap idea, but I don't think it's in the cards for me. I'm still looking into options, but I think a DSM is gonna be my project car after college. I just hate the fact that so many people have them, and that's what's keeping me thinking about the GNX7 idea

The GN swap should be relatively easy. I have never seen anyone swap a GN motor into a first gen, though I know it probably has been done... maybe not. It should be a very straight forward swap. The only issue I could think of incountering is hood clearance for the intake plenum. That is occasionally an issue for those who have swapped GN drivetrains into 2nd gens. The wiring shouldn't be too difficult, and the stock buick motor mounts can easily be modified to mate with the first gens engine craddle. You would likely have to make a tranny crossmember, and that should be pretty easy. The 2 reasons I like the Idea of a first gen donor as opposed to the 2nd gen is the fact that it is lighter, and it has a solid axle rear that can easily be converted to whatever rear you want.
DSMs are nice.... They are also problematic.

Yeah, it'll fit in the hatch for the trip to the recycler if you don't have a truck to haul it. Hard to get in and out though.
