Heres a question for you old school FC3s freaks

Today its pretty much hard to find a decent fc in good condition where it wasnt molested in some way. I am in the process of tracking down this electrical bug thats pissing me off now for about 2months my car turns on fine and everything but every now and then it goes completly blank.

I dont hear the infamous fc click of the starter when you turn the key. Pretty weird because i can go outside and turn my car on no problems, take it to the track and drive it back home with out an issue. But every once in a while my ignition doesnt do crap. So far it has happend to me 3 times in the last 2 months.

I am guessing it could be a ground issue but it works 99.99% of the time.
Maybe its my ignition its taking a dump on me.
My starter is new not even 3 months old,

So i started to look around to see if anything look out of the norm and i found something.

1- my car used to be N/A it didnt surprise me to see an extra harness under the dash.
2- theres a red fused 10 gauge amp type wire that runs from my fuse box in the engine bay to my ignition area...?
3- my key isnt damaged so i cant see it affecting the way the whole unit functions
4- Out of the 3 times she has acted up i had to push start the car to turn on and it did.

QUESTIONS---------------------------------------------
1-What do you think could be my bug issue ?

I located a harness off a parts car that i will remove so i can strip it clean and remove all the wires and clips that i am not using so i can have a cleaner harness and iginition issue solved. (I have removed everything that belongs under the dash or on it from the driver side to the passenger...a/c,idot lights,radio,etc......also i am currently running a microtech standalone system so theres no more harness on the passenger side.

2-Is the n/a and turbo driver side harness the same?, (The one that goes to the fuses and front fuse box ).

3-What about the N/A and turbo ignition system is it the same, ie, ignition switch, connectors, clips, wire colors, fusebox?

4- I was reading the haynes wire diagram for the n/a and turbo models trying to see if the voltage current and amperage is the same for both models when it comes to the driver side fuse boxes and couldnt find...... anything any pointers?

1 - Probably the ignition switch. Mine is actually doing almost the same thing, and I'm looking to replace it. New ones are ~$130, but if you have a parts car to source from, grab it and hope it's in better shape.

2 - The front harness on a NA is not the same as a turbo, but some swapping of wires could be done to adapt it. Depending on what engine harness you have, some of this could have already been done to complete the TII swap.

how does it act? on my NA to TII converted car, it takes a few turns of the key to get it to spin the starter, was told its probably solder points in the ignition somewhere.

Probably the plastic ignition switch that installs in the backside of the key switch assy. Could be a bad connection or corrosion in a connection somewhere though.

*****everything but every now and then it goes completly blank.******************************************** **********

What goes blank other than the key not causing the starter solenoid to click? Or is that all you meant by BLANK?

What exactly does this aftermarket red, fused wire go to? Exactly.

yeah when it goes blank its as if there was no battery in my car , the sound of your key turning clockwise is all the noise she wrote

i was reading a bit more on the haynes manual and found out on the diagram the ignition for 87 t2 is very similar to the 86n/a so that good i will ****** up that harness to see if i can start stripping it clean because we all know how many un-used wires and clips are in our cars

and the red wire goies into my ignition source it seems like its jumped as a direct source of ign power

i dont like it at all so i looked again and there is two sets of harness running alongthe driver side dash area so i will tackle this as soon as possible

I had a problem like this. Same symptons: every once in a while just didn't hear anything while trying to start. I would wiggle the terminals a bit and it'd work again.

Turned out it was the condition of the battery terminals on the harness. Fix for me: replaced the battery terminals. I just cut the old ones right off the harness, checked condition of wires, and installed aftermarket terminals.

I was told by a couple people that the stock ones wear out/deteriorate over time inside where you can't see. Not sure if this is true but it was my problem.

Engine fuse box.

Check the power wires that are bolted to the main engine fuse. My guess is they may have either become loose, corroded, or fried.

Remove the fuse box 10mm mounting bolts then open up the plastic doors and take a peak in on both the front and back side of the main power fuse.

i got a extra starter now FREEBIE!!!!!!
i will also grab that extra harness and strip it clean , i am removing all the crap i dont need this car is gonna be bug free one way or another...hell the rear harness is already done...evrything was stripped off the only wires i have running back there are the tailights and fuel pump harness everything else was stripped off then i taped it up really tight

its super small now, i think i removed close to 6 lbs of wires and clips that i wasnt using and will never use
