Help! I think i've dropped a washer inside the turbo while i was working on the ACV, what should I do?

 

get a lil extendable magnetic wand from napa or schucks......or your local parts store.

 

i tried, but its not picking up anything

 

time to take off turbo

 

I droped a nut in mine once and I had to bend the wand so it would curve with the turbo to get it out.

 

i've also used a extendable mirror to check to see if the washer is inside, but i don't see anything (or its too dark to see anything)

i've tried to forced the wand to curve on its own, but did u mean u curved it with your hands?

 

depepnding on which part of the turbo its in, I imagine if you got a powerful magnet and put it on the OUTSIDE and dragged it, it would drag the washer on the inside with it.

 

hed still have to contend with the compressor fins

 

the thing is, i put in this turbo to pass smog, and i got 5 days to finish putting in the ACV and airpump and other stuff, so i don't want to keep taking these parts in and out and all over again....

but would the magnet pick up the washer thru the thick aluminum housing?
or is there a way to disassemble the compressor housing while its ON the car?

 

I say, finsih your work, and fire it up. a washer isnt that big, im sure itll find its way out of the engine eventually!

that or hit the turbines, destroy the intercooler, get into my engine internals, fly thru the charger turbines, or end up SHOOTING out thru the cat, or ALL OF THE ABOVE -_-


is there no way i can do this (which is 100% sure i can get it out) unless i pull the turbo and shake the hell out of it?

 

anyone have anymore ideas?

 

If you are that pressed for time and ideas, you could take off the compressor inlet and blast compressed air into it until it shoots the washer out. But that would be spinning the turbo without lubrication.... its up to you.

 

First off if you put a magnet down there and havent gotten the washer, are you sure it is in there? Cause from what it sounds it couldnt have gone too far in if you haven't started/ran/cranked the car. I would take the magnet wand and bend it in a small 90 degree angle and wedge it in there and rotate it around and see if you get it, if you dont and your 100% positive its down there, just pull the turbo and turn it upside down and shake it out... I know it sucks but the damage it can cause would be worse . Good luck man, but make sure you double check all around the area to make sure your not worrying yourself over nothing.

yeah, that was what i was thinking if it went in at all, but i see no washer around the turbo or on the floor, and when i heard the "ping" from the washer hitting the metal (i guess i think) i saw something fall into the turbo outlet.

 

I'm in agreement with the smart way. TAKE IT OFF. Do you really think that taking a chance is worth the time of taking apart. Every state, every single one, lets you pay for your registration on time, and will issue temp tag while you are doing the work. Call DMV, take the turbo off, and worse comes to worse, whats the penalty for late registration? compared to new engine? Your call. I'll send you the late fees if you do the smart thing.

yeah, i was wondering if i can get a temp reg but do i just go to ask for it in DMV? (i always done these things on time so i don't know)

just tell DMV that you're fixing it. They'll give you an extension.

 

The only thing that you have to do, is pay in full, the registration fees as if you were going to register it right then. You have to pay them anyways, that way there are no late fees and you can get a temp, and fix it right. No sense taking chances. Also, its not like a ticket, so don't worry about having a bad mark on your record.

DMV would rather have their money, and issue a temporary, than try to have to chase people down for the registration dues. Just pay, fix it, and go back when fixed, and all is good. Plus , you can sleep at night knowing you did it right.

You dont have to pull the turbo....

Just remove the front compressor housing. Its not that hard and only a handfull of 13mm bolts.

 

see if you can shop vac it out,
I got a slice of a silicone coupler out of my turbo & a broke scraper blade out of my LIM like that before.. It might work on a washer.

 

siince i am stuck on one last bolt on my turbo and i really don't want to drain my oil, so i can just take out the 13mm bolts on the compressor housing? would the front turbine fin hit the housing or do i have to take out the nut holding the turbine?

 

You dont have to drain the oil to take out the turbo. Just take all the 13mm bolts off the back of the compressor housing and just pull off the housing. You may have a difficult time loosening all of them since there is limited space on the LIM side. Might as well take off the whole thing.

 

TAKE IT OFF AND VERIFY!!! seriously, think about how much youll hate yourself if you dont and it ***** **** up.

so i guess trusting my guts was good, or else i'll be running my car with a washer flying around.
