Help!!! very strange exhaust? noise

Ok, so i'm drving home from work today and as i'm about to pull into my neighborhood i let off the gas to deccelerate. As soon as i do i hear this outrageously loud metallic grinding/clanking noise coming from my engine bay. I immediately pushed the clutch in and as soon as the rpm's were down to idle the noise stoped. After pulling in my driveway and opening my door i heard the same metallic sound but much quiter coming from under my car. When i went and drove my car around i found out that the sound only happens on deccel, if the throttle is pressed at all no sound, but as soon as you let off it gets ridiculously loud, like everyone on the road turns and looks at my car loud. When i opened my hood and messed with the throttle i noticed that the sound is definitely coming from the exhaust manifold side of my engine so that leads me to believe that it's something in the exhast system. By the way my car is a 90 gxl. Any help would be greatly appreciated. i need to get it fixed and am honestly scared to drive my car around, it sounds that crazy!

Ok, thanks. Yea it definitely sounds like something has broken loose in there. While i was driving it around last night, i had to get on the car some to get out of someone's way and as soon as i did that the rattling got conseiderably quieter back to almost normal. When i got out of my car i went around back and could only hear the rattling in the right muffler. This is leading me to believe that maybe a piece of one of the cats might have come loose? and then gotten blown through the exhaust? Is this possible? i would imagine that would make a horrendous sound so it's what i'm leaning towards

Yeah that can absolutely happen, but that sure is quite a large piece. Usually just little sparks will come off the cats, but hey, anything is possible. However, from your description, it sounds like the piece was in the exhaust manifold, and since thats upstream in the exhaust system of the cat, that doesn't sound like its it. Any chance its an apex seal? Kidding, you'd know if that happened. Whatever it is, it must have been blown all the way into that rear muffler. You may never know what it is if it gets blown out of that muffler as well. Hopefully its nothing important
