Help!! TII swap or rebuild

Lightbulb Help!! TII swap or rebuild

I have a 1991 rx7 convertible 5speed with 90,000 miles. The body is in very good condition...but the water seals are shot(antifreeze bottle overflows until no antifreeze is left) I was going to order the rebuild kit from akins rotory which is around $1000...does anyone think I should just do a TII swap??? what if i buy the TII motor and transmission and then that motor goes??? I can get a motor and trans for around $1200... I plan to do all work myself...are there any other mods that I can do to give me good performance?? At first I was just going to rebuild my motor and add a racing beat full exhaust and a rtek7 ECU ( anyone have this setup??) and a decent body kit... I figured that these upgrades can be done for well under the cost of a TII swap done the right way (including the rear end swap) and it might give me the performance that i'm looking for... I plan to make this my project car since the wife won't let me build a lambo kit...thanks for your help guys.

I have a 90 Vert myself, it's been sitting for 10 months and I'm tired of it sitting in the garage. I'm debating on whether to dump a TII into it as well or just plain jane rebuild it. Build it the way you want it of course is going to cost $$$, rebuilding it will be $2K I figure already, so if you're doing that, you might as well save a few more $$ and do it the way that would put a smile on your face. Just remember, the $$ spent isn't coming back when you sell it.

I'm tempted to dump a rebuilt TII into it. Do it once and do it right.

I think if money is tight for a NA rebuild you should not do a TII swap.
you need more then just the motor and transmission, then like you said if you swap it and then the motor goes you are no better off then you are now.

Welcome to the board.

Before you rebuild, you need to verify that the coolant seals are bad. Our rotary's have a tendency to push out coolant that is not returned IF there is a small leak in the cooling system, especially in the overflow tube.

Remove the rad cap, fill the cooling system. Remove the fuse for the fuel injection. Have someone crank the starter. If the seals are really bad, you get GUSHING coolant from the neck. This means FOR SURE you need a rebuild. Anything less needs additional trouble shooting before you spend the bucks on a rebuild or swap. If it is just accumulating in the overflow tank, you may just have a small maintenance problem. Shops and posters on this board are pretty quick to say rebuild; sometimes you don't need one. 90,000 miles is pretty low miles for a N/A.
