Help: Randomly Stalls, Beeps, Idiot Lights Come On

I just bought this 86 NA RX7 from this guy, he told me this car is in good ship, and it is, but yesterday, when I was driving home from work, the car start to go crazy, like it just kept speed up then slow down speed up slow down on its own, then it died in the middle of the road, I was really scared, so I waited a bit, then start the car up again, it got me home fine. But today, on my way to work, as I'm driving on the high way, all of a sudden, the car just died, all the lil idiot light lit up, and the car started to beep at me. so I turned it off, and tried to start it up again, I tried to crank it at least 5 times, before it decide to start back up again. And that happened couple more times today on my way back from home.

this is my first rotary, so I don't know anything about them, what could be the cause of this? I was thinking O2 sensor, but it was perfectly fine the day before yesterday, and today, I can't even make it home without it dies on me for at least 3 times.

I'm really going to cry now, someone please help me!!!!!

Now now, save your tears for when your pulsation damper screw backs out and your engine catches fire.

LOL. now, the serious stuff...

Sounds to me like a bad electrical connection somewhere.. randomly comes "undone" at times while your driving and causes the car to A) accelerate/decelerate on its own because the electrical signal becomes interrupted, and B) Turn the motor off.

I had a similar problem with my CAS (crank angle sensor) wires being old and corroded, sometimes they would randomly turn the motor of during driving if i took a hard turn.

Check the FSM... you can find links for it in the FAQ thread in the 2nd gen forum. Grab a DMM and start checking for GOOD GROUNDS, your CAS, and IGNITOR COILS.

ANyone else have any ideas??

No problem. Now just saying that is one possibility, it could be a different electircal connection thats malfunctioning... or it could be something else entirely. But with problems like this you have to start from scratch and narrow it down! Get yourself a manual and a DMM and start checking.... start with the CAS because it sounds logical....

Post any updates

Does it do this when going over bumps?

You may also want to check the ground under the upper intake, it can come loose and do this .

What kind of speed does it do this at? are we talking around-town? or freeway? or does that make any difference?

I drive mostly high way, but the first time it died I was actually only going 20 ish, I was turning, and down shifted into 2nd, then I realized that it wasn't accelerating, the next thing i know, she started to beep at me. but today, it died on me 3 times while I was on the high way, but none else where...so I don't think speed is a factor.

another thing worth mentioning is that the temperature here kinda sky rocketed a bit since yesterday....might the heat do this to my 7?

I've edited your thread with a more reasonable title. When you post, make sure to use a title that actually describes what's in the thread.

As for the problem, you need to start with a full tuneup as described in the factory service manual.

Past that, it sounds like an electrical issue. Check all the grounds as described here: http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/grounding.htm

If those two things don't fix the problem then some troubleshooting will have to take place.

Hello Diedwater, I have 86 N/A RX7, and shortly after I bought mine it did the exact same thing you discribed. I replaced the atmospheric pressure sensor and it hasn't given me another days problems.

check the oil damn thing does weird things to me, also check coolant problems. as far as the beep goes, if the car is rolling like costing, beep, beep, beep, beep, real constant like, should just be the car telling you its stalled. Mine does that when i roll start mine, beeping tells me its moving fast enough to roll start, lol. Battery cables would be a nice place to go too! Also check plug wires and coil packs, (although 84 use distributor?) I'm having a arcing problem with mine that im sure will grow to something else. Also check your oil while the car is RUNNING, just be careful when you do so for obvious reasons. Also park your car in a clean spot tonight in the morning move the car and see if you see oil spots if so check oil metering pump seal, lines, injectors, and attached vacuum hoses. Yay rotaries, might only have 3 moving parts but still lets you have S%&# loads of fun with TS!!!
